I used to have a 2010 RSV4. Best bike I've ever owned, loved it. Nice. I was going to ask if you would recommend them, but I think that would be a daft question given your response. Get one! The base model I had did have a few problems - very very notchy gearbox - small fuel tank. I guess the 15/16 is much better as they ironed out those issues. Stick an Austin Racing can on it and you'll be grinning every time you hit the starter button.

Bloke 3 doors away has just chopped his V2 Tuono for a 1100 V4 Factory version. It's a staggering piece of kit, 2020 model and he paid £10k, its barely run in and is complete with carbon Akkro can, remapped with an unlocked ECU. I'll get a go on it when lockdown ends. He wants me to be his riding buddy, porky K1300s v a full fat Aprilia. Forgot to mention he has a 108mph Manx newcomers lap on a 250 behind him. What could possibly go wrong..

Pre-lockdown I commuted on the bike daily and I have been out on it recently. However, an incident last year really fucked with my head.
I was taking the Blade for a service. Heading on to the motorway, there's a tight, sweeping left hander. Shell gripped all the way round you can really take the piss. I was straightening up to join the motorway and getting on the power when I lost all drive, the engine stalled and I coasted on to the hard shoulder.
Got off the bike for a look and the chain had come off and wrapped itself around the front sprocket. If it had wrapped around the rear I'd have been spat off into the first lane.
Now, this is a well maintained bike. It's dealer serviced and I check and lubricate the chain regularly. The chain was nearer the end of its life than the start but still had life in it. There was a split in one of the links but it's unclear if that caused the incident or was caused by it.
I've had my share of crashes and injuries. I've seen the inside of my tibia and nothing has stopped me getting back on a bike but a mechanical failure like this on a healthy bike has made me paranoid as fuck and has shat on my confidence a bit. Every noise, every vibration now causes internal alarm.
I'm trying to be rational about it, telling myself it was a freak, one-off incident but the seed of doubt has been planted.

I know what you mean and mine was a car so nowhere near as dangerous. My owned from new i20 developed a seized caliper at about 10k miles. Because my commute wasn't much I'd not really noticed the onset as I'd just literally jump out of car and fuck off paying zero attention. One day took a longer run, got to destination and the fucking thing was like an over at the backend. Rang Hyundai and despite their warranty seemed to want to tell me I was stupid and imagining things. Took it in mechanic said we can't let you take that home even though we can't fix it now. Had it replaced then the other side started to go.....
I eventually replaced 3 fucking calipers on the fucker and like you say, I was driving with radio off and heater off just listening to sounds of dragging or overheated bearings. Once you've lost confidence in something you never enjoy it.
Actually you are a cunt as I just replaced my chain and now I'm worrying about if flared my rivets enough. You cunt!

Sadly being dealer maintained means very little these days. I can count the mechanics I trust to work on my bike with one finger.
That said, it does sound like a freak one off chain issue which is unlikely to repeat itself.
Most riders have some issue with confidence at some point. I had a "highside" on my RGV which kicked me out of the seat like I had been kicked like a rugby ball. I held onto the bars and was lucky enough to land in the seat. I was shaking like fuck and really affected my riding for longer than any "real" crash. Time is a great healer however. Pity it doesn't fix bikes too though.

Getting banned fucked my flow up. Just one year out of the saddle, selling my NC30 and 2 more years on a KMX125 fucked my sportbike skills for good. Add in my main riding parter gave up road riding to race classics for his old man and I had nobody to drag me up to speed anymore. It's amazing how often what you think is fast enough can be stretch out a bit more. With him gone I lost some motivation to nail it like I used to. It was all about being young thrusters at the bike cafe and in the space of couple of years it seemed like my wild days were over and I never really got that willingness to push back.
I'd have probably planted myself into tree if we'd carried on I guess. That's always the danger when one of you is better than the other.
Wish I still had the NC30 though.

Once you've lost confidence in something you never enjoy! I had the same problem with my Skoda Fabia VRs. The old models were notorious for it. Once you have a fault it just takes time to forget about it.

Def a freak one off like you say. Us bikers have enough to worry about with the things thousands of times more likely to take you out. Diesel. Bad drivers. Chains should not join that list.

Been out the last couple of day and ended up needing a post lockdown battery. I was getting a low battery warning, ignored it and then after going to work on it, it would barely start when I left. Charged it up again but it pulled the same stunt yesterday and took about 6 goes to fire. New battery fitted today. Seem to have a bit more top end now the exhaust manifold is actually seated and sealed. No more backfiring and seems to pull a bit harder as I get past 90. Apparently the original exhaust is about as good as it gets without going RC Cup on it and spending a bomb. New chain and sprockets probably makes marginal difference. Anyway. It's as spangly as it'll get without a nut and bolt rebuild. Most nuts and bolts that were in need were given a quick clean on the bench grinder with wire wheel and then just in an Evaporust type liquid for a bit. New fluids in engine, radiator and forks. Only colour change was I sprayed the rear spring and shock in Tough Black as the entire thing looked like corroded shit and rust on white looks terrible. Ground off as much rust as possible and treated the rest. It'll never see the all weather use its last owner subjected it so it should stay pretty much corrosion free now. May still swap out the rear shock as it's terrible.

I also added loads of spangly anodised orange bits and fancy levers and shit because all the kids will think I'm cool. Normally not a fan of such things but I think you can get away with it on such on odd looking bike.

The urge for more grunt may kick in. I was happy enough just bimbling around the lanes of Yorkshire the other day but it's hard work keeping things on the boil. Black shocks matter. Hope you like my number plate.

My onboard videos may have been shite, but at least the photographer got soem relatively decent shots of my track day! I know, those OEM indicators suck...
