I used to deride certain cars based on their image, especially MX5s. That was until I drove one. Man, the MX5 is such a great car to cane around in. Back to El noodle's quandary, without getting bogged down in specific brands, a 3.0l diesel saloon/coupe/estate is the ideal real world mix of speed, comfort and practicality. Those engines are pretty bullet proof. You could get a 2litre car, which opens up a ton of other manufacturers, but I think you'd miss the torque of the bigger lump. Torque is essentially true usable power when it comes to the road.

This is what a friend of mine said when he changed his car. "As an eco-warrior I did my research. Do you know the environmental cost of getting a new electric car built to ease your suburban conscience? Well as a home worker I couldn't possibly justify damaging the environment that much to cover the miles I do. So, buying a pre-owned car was the obvious choice. Taking that a step further I soon realised that if I owned a pre-owned gas guzzler I'd be saving the planet from it falling into the hands of a high mileage driver. Therefore it was my environmental duty to purchase a V8 5.0 Jaguar XK.I hope you all appreciate my sacrifice and if not, well if the sight and sound of a V8 Jaguar Sports car does not tingle just a little, you're probably already dead anyway."His previous car was also a Jag, he reckons they are very reliable, this is what he said about it before he got his latest "I am probably changing my car. If anyone wants this for its trade in value (what ever I am offered) for friends let me know. 2008 Jag XF 2.7 turbo diesel. 207bhp. Av 33mpg in all conditions. Been very reliable and surprisingly cheap to run over 6 years. Tyres are expensive though when needed . Trade in value is 3250.00 - 3500.00 it seems. 85k miles approx."

Arguably, if you enjoy driving, you should downgrade, not upgrade. I'm with Mekon on this, new cars are soulless, electronics on wheels and while they are fast(er) and safe(r) than older cars are they really more fun? I think not.
Go and buy a 1997 BMW M5, that'll put hairs on yer chest! The only concession to keeping you on the road in that is the limited slip diff. If pushed I'd even say go pre ABS for a real driving experience.

An older car is out as I'm not after a money pit although you need to be careful with newer cars too. I'm curious about the Audis now. The engines do seem quite strong but I'd need to blow my budget to get one within my age/mileage parameters.

That Jag looks tremendous Phil. I had a quick look at prices. 1st one which came up near me was this one. www.motors.co.uk/car-58415434/?i=5&m=sp£21,000 for a 10 year old car seems outrageously expensive to me. Seems a lot for a new car. But its only got 36,000 miles on the clock and is the eco friendly petrol engine. I had a lift in his old car and you could just feel the quality. So quiet, was the engine running? It was because when he floored it vvrrroooommmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. It could have given my old GSXR1000 a run for its money. Which is the issue I have with cars, performance is shit compared to a sportsbike. Plus I cant fit windsurf kit in them easily. My £8000 van I bought 2018, 5 years old 41,000 miles on it, which I had to spend £1800 on for new injectors last year. I wouldnt fancy driving a Jag in snow like we had then though.

ps, any car/van I've owned I have run into the ground. I've been driving 36 years and only had 5, a VW Polo 1100, Golf 1300, Astra 1400, Toyota Hiace van and now the VW Caddy. If I had something reliable and wasnt costing much money I'd keep it.

Aye I had a look and there was a 2014 model in Edinburgh for £27k but £29k buys you a 16-plate F-type.
I looked at sports cars. Always wanted a Porsche but they seem unreliable as fuck. Looked at a V8 Merc too but you'd never be done pouring cash into these fuckers. Always comes back to a 6-cylinder diesel for the best compromise of economy and performance.

I just paid off my mortgage so I'm in a financial position I've never enjoyed before but I could be happy hanging on to the CLK for another couple of years. It's definitely want over need.

Don't know about new Audis but that TT had uber build quality. The fucking thing was pristine underneath with zero rot of any concern at 20 years old. Fucking kept blowing MAF sensors but that a problem with that engine and it was a well old design.
The benefit of getting a car with Max Power fanbase is just about every problem with the fuckers has already been solved. When I changed steering rack some dude had posted a move y move wth pics account of him doing it. It's the same with Minis, loads of them and just about every problem is already solved.

Fella I just had a quick mooch in autotrader for 2016 and newer 3.0l diesels up to £20k and there's a shit load of options. Plus they are borderline sleeper cars which is the pinnacle of cool 4 wheel motoring.
