It's not quite a jag you are...
So sung those crazy nutty boys all those years ago. Ensuing chart success meant that, eventually, they could afford an entire car each. Sweet popularity.
I also like driving in my car and have a whole one to myself but I'm tempted to get it to fuck and splash out on a newer chap. My car is a 2009 Merc CLK320 CDI and the problem is that there is precisely fuck all wrong with it. It's in amazing condition for its age and is remap rapid. I just want a newer one with toys. I've been looking at a 17-plate E class 350d coupe which is essentially a newer version of what I've got.
Am I being mental? Should I just keep what I've got and save myself £20k? I expect that a remapped 350d will be easily capable of a sub-6 second 0-60 and return 40mpg but mine isn't too far off that.
Help me out you cunts.

My take is this. Ask yourself a few questions.
1. Can you afford it? 2. Do you really want it or is it a fad? 3. Is there a possibility you'd regret it in a months time if you purchased it? 4. Would it bring you pleasure? 5. Is the old motor at that point where it will need money spent on it on a regular basis to keep it reliable?
If you answer them honestly you will know what to do. Personally I like buying a bargain and fixing it up myself. Unless I was lottery winning rich, I'd probably never buy a decent car. Parts are so cheap these days, it is easy to keep a good car on the road for little outlay. But if you can't DIY then maybe it isn't as cost effective. I had a chat with my parents the other day about cars. My mum has my old convertible and my dad has the little SportKa I purchased my son (he didn't want it so I had to swap it with my Dad's Punto). They are both good cars and have only recently been MOT'd. But they are old and need regular maintenance (the cars not my parents) to keep them reliable. I'm getting a bit old and creaky myself now. A couple of months back I had to change the hubs and brakes on my bargain Astra and it made me realise that working on motors is getting hard work for me now. I doubt I have the energy to do a big job like a clutch any more. So I mentioned to my parents that maybe it is time to get rid of the old cars and look at leasing a new one to share between themselves. Probably be cheaper too.

Fella, I've got an Audi A6 biturbo. It returns 40mpg, has 320bhp, 650nm of torque, nudges 5 seconds on the nose 0 to 60 and, if you keep it in dynamic mode, sounds like a petrol v8. All that is without a remap.

That sounds like an awesome compromise Spents. I love driving like a cunt and will race any cunt that wants a bit but given the amount of time I actually drive now I find it hard to justify and I sort of prefer biking as I feel like I always have something to learn.
We may go down to one car when the Mini starts failing MOTs and I'll get another bike to use as a commuter. My wife has an Ecosport and it drives like sponge with wheels.
I'm just waiting for some more government anti-car retroactive cunt legislation to appear that makes it really hard to own petrol vehicles. I keep thinking I'd like to invest in a garage car like a MR2 or MK2 Golf but at this rate classic cars will get banned or something.

Don't really want to break the £20k barrier. Even that seems stupid money for a car. The Audis do seem to hold their value better though.

Yes but I could do with chucking some cash at my gaff. 2. Hmmmmmm 3. Probably not unless it's riddled with issues. 4. I'd imagine so. 5. Don't think so unless something catastrophic goes pop with the engine. I've just replaced all the front suspension and discs. I've actually spent a fair bit keeping this car in good condition which is kind of swaying me to just keep it and spend the money wisely on drugs and prostitutes. But is it better to sell it in good condition while it has value? I'm an indecisive cunt.

I think you know what to do but are looking for someone to tell you to do what you want to do. You know it's wiser to not buy and spend the money elsewhere but you want that fucking new motor! I'd do this in your exact situation. Think of a good price that you'd let the current car go for. Be honest and don't go too low just to make it all happen. Then see if you can get that price as a trade in or quick sale. If the price is not met or it is difficult to achieve, then accept that now is not the right time to buy the new motor.

Sell the diesel and buy a petrol, that way you can justify it to yourself as being more green. Simples.

Aye, that's pretty much the size of it although I'm also interested in alternatives that I haven't considered. Spents' suggestion of an Audi is interesting but I'd struggle to justify that expense. Also, I tend to buy good quality motors and keep them for 10 years so that's a factor.

Mate, the BMW 335d are the same performance if not quicker 0 to 60 and they're definitely cheaper with better fuel economy because they're lighter. A friend of mine has one and it is genuinely schnell. If they're a bit too steep then the 330d is good but cheaper still. Drop a map into one of those cunts and you'll have the same numbers as the biturbo.

Buy a tractor! I bet you can pull some fanny in one of those.

Buy a tractor! I bet you can pull some fanny in one of those. And then plough the bodies back into the earth once you have carried out the bidding of The Almighty, thus ensuring a good harvest.

My wee mechanic mate has advised against the Beemers. They apparently need serious cash thrown at them around 70k miles. But aye, they're seriously quick.

Drop a map into one of those cunts and you'll have the same numbers as the biturbo. Pretty good remap figures showing up for your Audi. The only regret I have about my remap is that I didn't do it years earlier. Yes I got extra ponies but it transformed the engine, made it smoother and more driveable and gave it a top end where before it had an asthma attack. It's the first thing I'll do to any car now.

If you like your cars I vote upgrade. I've never owned a Merc so I dont know the difference in what you are running now to what you want but I imagine its similar to changes I've done with Beemers and I've never regretted it once. As long as its within budget. I've just purchased my 5th straight bmw a month ago - I've never had any mechanical issues with any and I've had a fair old mix (but never a high mileage petrol).
