Prompted by a post in DeadPool, it got me thinking. 70's and 80's television, was for the most part, awful! Even the shows you liked back then as a kid were horrendous if you take a look at them now. Case in point for me was the Six Million Dollar Man. I fucking loved that show but when I sought out an episode on YouTube a few years back, I was horrified how shite it was. Think back to all the big TV shows of that era. You had shit like Terry and June and It Ain't Half Hot Mum as prime time shows. Fucking Little and Large was essential Saturday night prime time viewing for fucks sake! Even the shows you remember still being good like Minder are actually crap for the most part. And I loved George Cole so it pains me to say that. There are a few that still hold up like Rising Damp and Yes Minister. I'm sure there are more but my brain has gone to sleep right now. Add the shows you think are still good today from that era but also try and list the shows that are fucking awful.

You say that Droog but at least we didn't have all that reality and cheap TV then. For me The Young Ones changed everything TV speaking. Things I thought were good got look at differently and flushed. I might get a bit of stick for this, but what a load of old shite Only Fools And Horses was. Cosy and unrealistic doesn't cover it.

I loved the SMDM!....but I can imagine it’d be shite watching it now!
A few I used to watch, and a few I watched with my folks.
More for my parents than me but I also remember watching them... Bergerac Howard’s Way The Brothers Onedin Line
I enjoyed these too back in the day... Starsky and Hutch. Kojak Randall & Hopkirk(Deceased) The Sweeney (get your trousers on son, you’re nicked!) The Professionals...

Bonnet de douche!!....mais oui garcon le petit pois!! i loved it...I still watch reruns. i was going to add Spender to my list but it was 1991 so missed the cut...I spent my formative years in the NE so this show brought back happy memories...

I recently found the first series of Tales of the Unexpected online. That was genuinely good.
On the other hand, I watched Chelmsford 123 again recently and it was indeed tosh.

Young Ones, Filthy Rich and Catflap and the bulk of the Comic Strip Presents are immune from this.
I liked the Sweeney and the Professionals but if you watch them now, they are pretty poorly written and acted. They never seemed to be able to conclude an episode properly. I enjoy them for the locations mainly now. It's amazing how much of London is totally unrecognisable now from that era.

In fact, Filthy Rich and Catflap sums up the era perfectly as that was the whole premiss of the show. A satire on how shit 70's and 80's TV was.

Listen carefully, I will say this only once...............
I still watch that on one of the cable channels, its lost nothing over the years. Looking it up, there were nine series between 7 September 1984, to its conclusion on 14 December 1992.
Dad's Army, 1968 to 1977. That was 9 series long as well, I thought it was longer. I can still watch that today, and enjoyed seeing the newer film in the cinema a few years ago.
Agreed with Yes Minister, a clip did the rounds recently after the virus took off.
Good thread Mr Droog. A lot of it hasn't stood the test of time, but that doesn't really matter, at the time it was entertaining.

Maybe we have gotten more sophisticated in what we need to be entertained nowadays? Having said that, I think some of the best documentaries ever were produced pre 90's. Documentaries used to be filled with learning, truth and facts. Now it's opinion and shock value. A bit like the news.

Imagine trying to pitch On The Buses nowadays. I don't mean the politically correct aspect. It's just shit. Two old blokes in their late 40's or early 50's pretending to be 30 who are always letching after young ladies whilst trying to avoid doing their job properly.

Maybe we have gotten more sophisticated in what we need to be entertained nowadays? Love Island, You've Got Talent (not), and the other 100s of shite reality stuff. In 40-50 years time, what will stand the test of time?

I made a point of visting Colditz castle on my way to the Lausitzring for WSB. The TV drama was a good one, at the time.

I am ignoring reality TV from this. I thinking more along the lines of comedy and drama.
