Bicycling help neede again....
Went out this morning, early doors, and about 5kms into my ride, both derailleurs stopped shifting. Front wouldn't change down (already on No.3 so there was no "up") and the rear wouldn't go in either direction.
I got off and had a try to free them up by hand, but they were having none of it, so I had to ride home without changing gear (lucky it was stuck in a relatively low gear so I could tackle the uphill section).
But, when I got back to the garage (underground parking), as I rode to my space, the gears began to shift (I had left the shift levers where I wanted the gears to be, and with slack in the cables).
The only thing I can think is that there is some residual moisture in the mechanisms and it froze, and on entering the garage the rise in temperature defrosted them, but is this even a thing? Seems unlikely to me, but its the only explanation I can think of...
Anyone had this happen or know how to stop it? WD-40?

Were the levers moving or was everything seized?

Were the levers moving or was everything seized? The levers were freely moving and when trying to shift down, the cables slackened, but the derailleurs wouldn't move, as if the spring had a resistance which it could not overcome. Trying to change up just had me pushing as hard as I could on the lever till my thumb hurt and the cable felt like it was stretching so that mechanical resistance was stopping the movement in the other direction also but at the derailleur end. I had the front do something similar a few months ago, but it was caked in dry mud which had jammed it up, I spayed some water on it to rinse off the mud and it was fine, but today there was no visible gunk to wash off, which I why I thought it might be ice (that and the fact that they freed up on getting back to the garage).

I had a similar issue and the gear cable outer sleeve had split. That doesn't explain why the gear changed once you got home though.

I'll take everything apart to clean it at the weekend, that usually helps!

I'll take everything apart to clean it at the weekend, that usually helps! Not in my case. If I take it apart it ain't going back together. When was your bike serviced last? You might need new cables. I think your bike is haunted.

I've never changed the oil if that's what you mean! Depending on what you paid for your bike, you might be better off selling after 3-4 years and buying new rather than service every year. I know that my derailleurs will piss about soon enough so am more than happy for someone to sort it. Downhills and flats are no fun without the big ring. Trust me.

I had my first proper ride today in what feels like ages. It was almost ideal weather.
The 'plan' was a mid 30 miler but I knew full well at about the turn off point for that I would say "shall we press on?" and I did and we did.
It boosted my spirits no end.

The inevitable happened yesterday. It is surely a turning point in my life.
My son, now 13, had to stop at the top of a climb and wait for me.
To my credit, he is on a brand new 27.5" wheel bike while I'm still on a 26" Chinese foldable bike, but still, I fondly remember the good old days when I had to wait for him.
To his credit, he didn't start shouting "come on dad! you're nearly there!" as I probably did to him when it was the other way around....

Anyway, getting my trusty old (1997) 26" Trek Y-22 back up and running. Lot more fun and skechy than these modern 27-29" with slack head angles. If i cycle more, then I will considers a newer bike.

In the loch Ness area for a couple of days. Thought I'd cycle from Invermoriston to Drumnadrochit along the great glen way. It's only 22km, I'll be there and back in a couple of hours.
Fuck me. I haven't underestimated the sheer magnitude of an activity since I was shagging big Clare. Took me an hour to get 5km although, in my defense, it included a 270m elevation over very difficult terrain.
Bottom line is I'm extremely unfit, regardless of my age. I need to get the finger out and up my fucking game.

I'm shite at the moment. I spent my free time motorcycling so I am miles better at that but miles off cycle fitness.
I also hate cycling now as I used to like it as a solitary pursuit. Now all these cunts are everywhere in their rapha waving and nodding. I have enough of that shit on the motorbike. Fuck off an let me ride on solitude.

Question for cycling cunts. What is the correct protocol when driving and you come up behind cyclists two abreast who are aware of you but make no attempt to move over and let you past.
