You can spin the lorry driver shortage whatever way you like. Its a bit naïve to just blame BREXIT, or not blame BREXIT at all. To say its BREXIT ignores the COVID situation. To say its nothing to do with BREXIT because Europe also has a massive shortage. Really? When Europe's shortage is less of a shortage than ours means the UK has a hyper-shortage. Even The Daily Fail partially blames BREXIT, if you google it. Dont bother, its a shit company and not worth the web traffic it gives them for selling advertising, wish I hadnt bothered TBH. The BBC also gives the same reasons, but doesn't give you a map of where Europe is. www.bbc.co.uk/news/57810729UK has a shortage of 100,000. Mainland Europe 400,000. No doubt Europeans have left the UK due to Brexit & Covid but until you ask them why they left you dont know. The drop in £ Sterling againt €, Zlotty, Lei or whatever. Germany has a 40,000 shortage. Reasons here, and probably the same reasons as why Brits arent interested in the job. www.transportlogistic.de/en/trade-fair/industry-insights/truck-driver-shortage/There are serious reasons for the waning of the profession:
Age structure: The logistics industry did not manage to attract enough newcomers to the profession to replace the older generations. Unattractive working conditions: Stress, excessive working hours and a low quality of life are among the day-to-day challenges for many truck drivers and define their hard everyday work. Low wages and low social status: The wages of the drivers are not sufficient to compensate for the stressful working conditions. The social status of truck drivers is also low and they meet with little appreciation. Rising crime rate: The high crime rate which reflects risks faced by truck drivers must not be underestimated as well. Thus, the GDV reports (only german) that cargo worth 1.4 billion euros is stolen in Germany. In addition to that there are 900 million euros in penalty payments for delayed deliveries, repair costs as well as loss of sales and production for the final recipients. The assaults on truck drivers are not even included in these figures.

No fucking wonder the Noodle brain likes this, because I can't make head nor tale of this logic.

Its a yes BREXIT is one of the reasons why the driver shortage is so high in the UK, compared to EU countries. Yes there is a shortage in the EU countries, but its not as bad as ours. Take a look at the survey from the road haulage association which asked for the reasons why drivers have quit the job in the UK. When I said "No doubt Europeans have left the UK due to Brexit & Covid but until you ask them why they left you dont know" I was being flippant as I wrote that just after giving the BBC article which states the reason why they left. The survey the BBC quoted from is here if you want to read it. If the link doesnt work, google 'road haulage association driver shortage survey' and you should see a list of results with one starting www.rha.uk.net near the top. I cant copy/paste, but it says 58% of respondents said BREXIT was one of the reasons why drivers had left. www.rha.uk.net/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=ICI0C-FWmVo%3D&portalid=0×tamp=1627564639720

Like Phil wrote, it's not a black and white issue, multiple factors involved and I personally wasn't aware that the EU was also suffering from a driver shortage, but the MSM will never report that.

I dont think the EU's shortage has affected supermarket supplies and shelves yet as 1) probably a lot of overtime going on and 2) UK imports a lot of food. The UK has a just in time approach to a lot of supplies. I noticed a lot more local markets & corner shops on my travels in the EU and you dont need HGVs for that.

I dont think the UK driver shortage was reported much in the UK before BREXIT as it didnt affect supermarket shelves. I bought a new windsurf board from a shop in Poole. The importers warehouse is in the New Forest, 25 miles away. They said couriers were hard to find for longer length packages and expensive, their profit margin is very tight as their costs have rocketed after BREXIT. They would drop the board in 2-3 weeks, or I could collect it myself next day if I wanted. So I had a day out in the New Forest.

This tweet is perfectly symbolic of Brexit. John Redwood was one of the moronic cheerleaders for this mess and here he is blaming the EU for the disastrous situation that he and his colleagues built.
The NI protocol was negotiated and agreed by the UK government. You wonder what it would take for these shameless cunts to own the massive shite that they coiled out.
