This is a family short break so no tips for places to get blind drunk or find prostitutes.
Only there for 4 days but that should be enough.

Depends what you're into. Plenty of culture and the Scottish Museum in Chamber St is amazing. Free entry.

pantah is your man for the Embra although it's oddly difficult to recommend touristy stuff in a place you never go to as a tourist. My personal recommendation would be the train to Glasgow however if you insist on staying in AIDSville then I'd recommend the national gallery for the ultimate cultural experience. There are some incredible paintings in there but your kid will hate it. The castle is an obvious tourist trap. It's worth it if you haven't been before but I find Stirling Castle more interesting. No idea what keeps kids quiet in Edinburgh apart from heroin.

If you're feeling energetic and want a cracking view of Princes St and the castle you could climb up Scott Monument or thunderbird 1 as it's fondly known as. Well that's what I call it. Avoid the Royal Mile unless you like shops selling Chinese tartan shite. My mate does the open top city tours as a guide. Which is nice. Mr Reasonable is right though, us locals never do the culture tourism. There's a tour of the old city which is actually underground and was buried with the plague which is reputed to be amazing. And haunted.

Of course the number one destination should be to Easter Road. The hallowed ground and home of Hibernian FC. That goes without saying.

You can do a ghost tour and really traumatise your kid.
I'm guessing that this is your first holiday abroad and I wouldn't presume to tell you how to entertain your family however if you've only got 4 days then I'd do a bit of Googling and make sure you maximise your time by planning stuff to do. Otherwise you'll spend your time wandering about with a bored kid going "this is shite" and get home going "wish we'd done all that stuff."
Also, if you plan on eating out then get your Yorkshire wallet some pre counselling now.

I forgot Mekon was a Yorkshire type.
Another free suggestion is Arthur's Seat which is on top of Holyrood Park and overlooks the city and the new parliament building. 🙂
Apart from the famous drug culture Edinburgh differs from Amsterdam in that it's the opposite of flat and if you're walking about the place you do a fair bit of climbing. Best do a bit of training first.

I've never actually been up Arthur's Seat (fnarr). I should put it on the list. A good choice for a kid as the wee cunts love climbing shit.

We also booked a couple or three nights for late winter next year, so a helpful thread for me too.

Can the non-Scottish tourists please provide feedback after the event (assuming you survive)? I've literally lost count of the countries I've visited (most for work sadly though) but have to confess that I've never been to Scotland. I like shortbread though.

My mother is born of Scottish stock but they fucked off down South for work or whatever so other than being born, so she didn't spend any time in Scotland. A bit like the MacKenzie kids.
Got a few things jotted down now. A cat cafe being one of them, the zoo and a place called Camera Obscura? Most of it is coming out of the joint account which is in surplus at the moment so the direct effect on my wallet won't be so bad. May have to get myself a made in China tartan hat or something though.
Just realised there's Rallycross on at Knockhill so I'm a bit fucked off we aren't going until Monday as I wouldn't have minded seeing that.
