Anyone on here been tempted to part with their hard earned on one of the next generation systems? This will probably be the first Playstation I haven't purchased. Never been an X Box man personally.
But looking at the systems that Series S is good value for money (relatively) and if i was still into cutting edge gaming, I think this is the time I would switch teams and buy an X Box rather than the Playstation.

I am giving this generation a miss for the moment. No compelling Sony exclusives really.
The answer for me is a gaming PC. The problem I have is that games systems are very incremental in terms of graphics and gameplay, especially if you have a gaming PC. What I've seen can be equalled or surpassed by a PC. We are still on the same basic controller, so the games will be more of the same.
The main element for me is the freedom of PC. We are getting into an era where your content is completely controlled and you owning the disc means nothing. Ok, it;s like that for the PC but the PC also has piracy and modding to unfuck games. Prices tend to be a lot cheaper as well.
Modding is a major attraction tbh. Look at Skyrim and the Skyblivion project. Bethesda will probably steal the idea and charge £70 for soon. For my sim racing games like Assetto Corsa I've got tens of gigabytes of new cars and tracks, all for nothing. Hell I even use a mod to allow me to use the PSVR on the PC for driving sims. Most sims allow you to import your own liveries designed in photoshop or whatever. Want to drive a Nazi inspired F1 car? You can. Even if you get banned you can still pirate all the content as well.
I'm going to wait until the 3xxx nvidia stuff starts to flow. Apparently the 3070 is faster than 2080ti and only £500.

I've looked at building a new PC but the cost is just frightening when you have to start from scratch again.

The corona tax is real when it come to PC stuff at the moment. Prices went stupid. Luckily I bought it all used because this shit started.
Think you'd even have a job on finding a console. They are hen's teeth at the moment.

My lad is eyeing up a PS5. His x-box days are over.
What about the Oculus Quest?

True. I did consider doing the buy ex business Dell PC and putting a bog standard GTX 1650 low profile with no need for separate power supply but the one I was looking at had a generation four i7 in it and just 8GB of ram with a 120GB SSD and the cunt wanted nearly £300 for it. Add on another £160 for the GTX and at least another £60 for some more ram. That build will be ok for lower end stuff but it has no scope for upgrading. The £520 it could cost would maybe be better spent on new components with an upgrade path. Maybe a new base unit can be built for that money if you forgo a graphics card and add one at a later date. Still weighing it all up but I won't be doing £2500 plus on building a rig any more. Those days are long gone.

The quest is a decent piece of hardware I suppose but........you have to have a Facebook account and not a burner one. I only ever had a burner account and got removed recently. I have no intention of having a real facebook account so that's a no from me. Basically you spend £300 on an Oculus, call Greta Thunberg a cunt and get banned and then that's £300 down the drain. Not sure but the hardware may also be locked to your account on registration so you can't sell it.

I was looking at getting my youth a PS5, but they're just not worth the hassle to get hold of, unless you plan on profiteering and reselling. He has a gaming PC, but also a PS4, all of the first releases, eg Miles Morales etc with be on PS4 too, so he can wait until next year when everything has calmed down. Although I think he will spend most of his time on PC anyway, he is always on discord to his friends and they play more PC orientated games.

My boy wanted a PS5 this year too, but buying it now at full whack is a mugs game.
I've convinced him to have a new mountain bike this year on the basis that PS5s are only going to come down in price during 2021.

Sony always do this with a new console release, it's almost like that shocking Arnie movie 'Jingle All The Way.' If I was a bit more cynical I would think that they deliberately do it to create a buzz around their product.

I think it is just a global fuck up. Sony couldn't even supply the japs with more than 120k of them. Apparently that is it for Japan now until after Xmas.
Sony announced this console and claimed there would be no shortages this time. Xbox did the same. Yeah right.
What I find surprising this time is how under the radar the launches are. I think gaming has peaked.

I think gaming has peaked. It's difficult to say, mate- in relation to the correlation between the PS5 launch and gaming peaking that is. I think the number of units available may be linked to Covid, but also the PS5 seems to have received a fair bit of prime time mainstream media advertising, eg TV etc. I don't know how much online advertising has been done though. Maybe they didn't push it as much because they knew they couldn't hit the requisite numbers. Certainly Sony have a tonne of previous for this kind of launch shortfall. I don't know what kind of numbers the latest call of duty has shifted. Cold War has been the first one that we've not purchased on launch. But that's partially due to last years re-hash of Modern Warfare being so good. I tell my boy that I served during the cold war, but I don't tell him that it mostly involved patch-painting land rovers and getting in the raw in squadron bar. I suppose the real big acid test for where gaming is at will be when the next GTA comes out.

My Mrs knows a family that discovered how much a 3-4 year old lad absorbs when GTA is being played in his presence. The parents are not together. The dad used to play GTA when he was round. One Sunday lunch with mum and her parents and maybe more, the lad instructed everyone to "eat up, mother fuckers!" He's got a bright future.
