The noose was a strange one. Was it actually a noose or just a loop of rope? Quite a coincidence it would appear in Wallace's garage just after he was instrumental in getting confederate flags banned. Also, is there so little money in NASCAR that they can't afford to replace broken door handles?
Racism in sport has to be made socially reviled. This takes years of campaigning. The Scottish government tried to eradicate sectarianism in football with a law that applied only to football matches and it was a massive failure. Rangers fans were still singing about being knee deep in fenian blood and Celtic fans were still singing about the IRA. The clubs didn't do enough because why alienate your core customer base? Opposition politicians tore into it just to oppose everything the SNP government did and eventually it got repealed which in turn sent out the message that the songs were acceptable. Police won't wade into a massive crowd to make an arrest in case it causes a riot and the bigotry continues because people are brought up steeped in it.
I think we have progressed. I remember 30 years ago, bananas being thrown at black players. Monkey chants were fairly routine. But then you look at some teams in Italy, Russia, etc and they're where we were 30 years ago. It's fucking exhausting and if I'm honest it depresses me.
There's been a 3-part documentary on the murder of Stephen Lawrence on BBC 2 this week. Not sport related but essential viewing for anyone who gives a fuck about racism in the UK. The determination for justice and the sheer dignity of that poor guy's mother is utterly humbling.

My dad is nearly 96 and still goes on about paki shops and foreign sounding names. I get fed up correcting him and unfortunately can’t unfriend him. I despair.

The one that shocked me was the noose hung in the garage of the black Nascar driver last weekend, that's a thinly veiled death threat right there sireee... Did Dominic Cummings help them out? The noose found in Nascar driver Bubba Wallace's garage on Sunday was actually a handle on a garage door and had been there since last year, an FBI investigation concluded. It sounds like this might just be a genuine coincidence but why use a noose as a tied handle on the garage door anyway? Quotes from BBC article. Ha ha!! I hadn't heard that part of the story over here!

My dad is nearly 96 and still goes on about paki shops and foreign sounding names. I get fed up correcting him and unfortunately can’t unfriend him. I despair. Don't worry. When we're that age (if we ever get there) our kids will cringe and swap stories with their mates about how their dads still refer to people by the gender that their outward appearance suggests that they biologically belong to, or something equally as "absurd" as we see it now. I remember having conversations with our office manageress who retired when I was a recent graduate and sadly is no longer alive. She would always say that the fact that black people were working as professional surveyors and architects in the 1990s was amazing considering that she remembered being taken as a kid to the docks to "see if we can spot any nig-nogs"... this was a game instigated by her parents.

Reading through this thread I thought a rope handle on an up and over garage door to pull it down to close was ok until I saw the picture of the noose, but if it had been there for a year it sounds like a coincidence, unless he was allocated the 'noose garage' on purpose (doesn't seem likely).

If the rope had been there since last year how would anyone know what garage Wallace was going to use?..
This smells a bit like the Jussie Smollett fake hate crime....only this time the person involved has nothing to do with it, it was NASCAR officials who set the alarms bells ringing without investigating properly..

I think NASCAR acted okay. What bemuses me is why have a noose in such a setting? ad it been a rope with a knot, no issue.

Banzai derby in Edinburgh this evening. Hibs have had a blistering start to the season while Motherwell have been utterly pish, racking up one point from a possible nine.
Smart money would be on Hibs to maintain their 100% record but could this be the game that Motherwell remember where the fucking goal is?

Winning the first three games in a new season equals a record set 46 years ago. To win four sounds improbable. I predict a 2-2 draw.

On a lower level, what the fucks happened to Barcelona. 8-2 That’s just ridiculous

basically a hungry team outfought a complacent team, pique standing and watching that Bayern defender weave his way into the box was a cameo of the whole game, Bayern closed down quickly on anyone in possession, Barca didn't.

I'd have bitten your hand off for that point before the match but ultimately disappointed that we didn't do more.
2 points from 12 is a very poor start but looks like progress is being made. Can't see us holding on to Turnbull but if he goes then it's a much needed financial breather for the club.
