When Harry stepped up to take the penalty, the Spanish commentators said "the two best players on the pitch go head to head". I don't think they were wrong.

Half time. Fuckin hell, what a start. What a goal. The first 15 minutes were ours, the next 30+4 theirs, but still 1-0.

Groan. Penalties. Italy haven't lost a game for yonks and England werent going to beat them in normal time once they recovered their form. England stuck on just 2 shots on target from just after the start of the second half iirc.

Donnarumma dwarfs Pickford. Not surprised he hasnt lost in a penalty shootout. Maguire's penalty was our best, smashed it. Forwards trying to place their kicks didnt work. Italy defended well, they didnt allow Kane and Sterling a chance to shine. Great squad and spirit, deserved it on the night. England have a young squad with talent, World Cup next year.

As soon as they hesitate with penalties they seem doomed to miss.

Best team by far won. England did well to reach the final but were out-classed on the night.

There's no doubt that England got lucky and had by far the easiest route to the final and also benefited from home advantage for all but one of their matches. Having said that, you can only beat what's put in front of you and to reach the final having only conceded one goal was impressive regardless of who they faced on the way.
The subsequent racial abuse of players on social media was depressingly inevitable. Johnson and Patel have got some neck to condemn it having previously stated that fans have every right to boo players taking a stand against racial intolerance. Also, I honestly don't understand why some people are shouting for Southgate to go. He has brought England its greatest success in over 50 years for fuck sake.
And the BBC news coverage was way over the top. Practically the whole program was devoted to the match. They had prerecorded reels interviewing grown adults with their faces painted that they clearly intended to run while basking in the joyous afterglow of an England win. They ran them anyway. Their final tournament roundup was, again predictably, only about one British team. No mention of Wales and only a scant reference to Scotland as one of the teams England played. Doesn't matter how far each progressed because the tournament was over and they'd all won the same number of trophies. Having dedicated the entire show to England, it perhaps wouldn't have been too much to ask for a "British" broadcaster to at least pretend during their tournament roundup.
