I thought Ginger Baker was the greatest? Or was that in the cunt rankings? Definitely cunt. Decent drummer but as for greatest, surely that is Buddy Rich. John Bonham is my personal favourite. He changed rock drumming forever. Aye, Bonham made drums massive in every tune but surely Bill Ward was better at it? Sabbath never quite hit the same heights as Zeppelin but listen to Ward's drumming on something like The Wizard and it's incredible stuff.

Didn't Ward have to pack it in when dementia started to kick in? Couldn't remember the tracks etc?

Didn't Ward have to pack it in when dementia started to kick in? Couldn't remember the tracks etc? Never heard that. I saw their reunion tour a few years ago which disappointingly didn't include him. Apparently they couldn't agree on money. Over the last 40 years I've seen several incarnations of Sabbath and Ozzy but never saw that classic early line-up together. In fact, Reading '83 featured Black Sabbath with Ian Gillan on vocals and it was highly questionable. The best (and worst) bit about that gig was the on-stage Stonehenge which inspired a whole fucking movie.

Check out The Art of Drumming on SKY Arts
Plenty of accolades for Bill Ward on that

I also liked the Dio version of Sabbath...and the later Heaven and Hell incarnation... "Rainbow Rising" was my introduction to RJD, what a voice.

Aye, I saw Heaven and Hell about 10 years ago? It was ok but kind of descended into Spinal Tap farce when Dio started doing his devil sign. I don't dislike the Dio stuff, he was their singer when I first heard them, but the early stuff with Ozzy, Ward, Butler and Iommi was just tremendous, dark, industrial rock. There were no passengers in that band.
