Oh. Utter fuck. He was my hero as an early teenager on the terraces at Brighton. That's really hacked me off. You'll be pleased to hear that here the hommages on the news are quite amazing, he was friends with everyone in Spanish sport it seems, Pau Gasol, Carlos Sainz, Rafa Nadal.... it's amazing to see how popular and famous he was here.

Later on this evening, I shall gently touch myself to the memory of Jill Gascoine.

Florian Schneider, co-founder of Kraftwerk.
Now that was one influential group! Light-years ahead of everyone and everything.

Some cunt on the radio made the point that Autobahn was recorded just 4 years after the Beatles split up. Absolute visionaries decades ahead of their time.

Dave Greenfield out The Stranglers too. I kind of dumped them after Hugh Cornwell left. The vocalist is always the most difficult to replace and some bands you just can't imagine with a new singer. But I saw them headline Reading in '83 just after Golden Brown had been in the charts and they were tremendous. Golden Brown is obviously the Track that Greenfield is most famous for composing but stick on pretty much any Stranglers track and the keyboards are front and centre. Unusual for a punk band and my recollection is that punk fans were split over it. The stories of him playing these complex pieces with one hand because the other hand was busy holding his pint are just glorious.
The understated legends are dropping like flies this week. Fair enough they were all getting on a bit but still...

Fair enough they were all getting on a bit but still... One of my earliest memories of any band was of The Stranglers, and I lay the blame squarely at the feet of my older brother. He introduced me to Live X Cert, Rattus Norvegicus, No More Heroes, The Raven and then the big "WTF" moment; The Gospel According to the Meninblack! A properly trippy album fuelled by a mixture of drink, heroine and pot!

The keyboard playing on Get A Grip On Yourself is just fucking awesome. isn't it? It highlights his skills more than Golden Brown. He was one of those musicians that most people would recognise his work but very few knew his name.

Tony Allen has fallen through the cracks of this thread. Another understated legend that I was fortunate to have seen live a couple of times. Brian Eno described him as "perhaps the greatest drummer who ever lived". Along with Fela Kuti, he created afrobeat and helped define modern African music.

I thought Ginger Baker was the greatest? Or was that in the cunt rankings? Definitely cunt. Decent drummer but as for greatest, surely that is Buddy Rich. John Bonham is my personal favourite. He changed rock drumming forever.

Tony Allen created a genre. He fused jazz with African rhythms and was said to be able to play multiple separate beats simultaneously.
