MM unbeatable at that circuit, he followed Pedrosa easily and only took him when Rossi was closing in. I thought the 0.3 penalty was fair enough, it wasnt Rossi's fault he got forced off the track but he did gain an advantage. Lucky it was tarmac and not gravel. Not sure what Zarco was thinking, there was never room to get through. That results makes the championship more interesting. Currently Rossi doesn't look capable of winning if MM or MV stay on, will he get a title without winning a race? Good to see Pedrosa back on the podium.

Was thinking the same today wrt Rossi bagging the title with consistency over wins.... Although Zarco was a bit naughty, it's good to see he's not afraid to have a go....maybe if he'd waited then tried again but Rossi isn't easy to pass. Shame Vinales dropped it as it would have been great to see all the top guys having a go at each other....he had the pace.

Thought Rossi rode well. Same tyre combination as Zarco and pulled away from him. Caught and passed Danni with the same front and a medium rear, Rossi is much heavier than Danni but managed not to fry his front tyre. At end of race best combo would have been hard-hard if Cal and MM's pace was anything to go by, yet he still managed to get a move on at the end. Maverick showed signs of letting Marc get to him. I don't think 2017 is going to be a two horse race by any means, it's shaping up to be a classic.

Oh dear god, the lunacy has begun. But before we get to that... Not a bad race. Not super exciting, but interesting story lines going forward. Obviously the Vinales crash makes things more interesting, not just in terms of points but in terms of his confidence. Rossi continues to be a total enigma in practice. He seemed to pull that qualifying lap from nowhere, and then his race pace was pretty competitive, even if this week it looked more like everyone slowed down on race day, rather than Rossi speeding up (as was the case in the last round). Now, on to that famous penalty... Does anyone think that Rossi should maybe have had to drop a place back behind Zarco after gaining time by cutting the corner or was the 0.3 second penalty fair? It happens plenty of times where riders have to give back a place in the lower classes and Zarco`s pass was hard but fair. Um, there was no pass. And whatever that was, it was certainly hard, but not fair. As Rossi stated, there were only two options: run wide or crash. So Zarco never made a pass, and Rossi didn't have to give anything back, because all he did was avoid an crash nearly caused by another rider getting into the corner too hot. And how many times have we seen Marquez abuse the paved runoff area because of his OWN mistake and silly Playstation approach to racing, with nary a harsh work uttered by race direction. Right, although I don't think he could have stayed on the track. Zarco ran slightly over the line himself, so there is no way Rossi could have stayed within the regular track limits without significant contact. Why did they have to give him something? How many times have we seen similar incidents where no penalty was assessed? As for the .3sec, yes, Rossi did gain some ground on Marquez after the incident (despite sitting up and looking back at Zarco), but it all seems a bit arbitrary (unless they compared that lap time to the previous, or something like that). Why is the world should Rossi have ceded the place? Assuming he actually saw Zarco coming in there (which it seems like he didn't), why should he just automatically back off? Rossi has the right to make Zarco work for the spot, and Rossi has the right to at least a sliver of track on the outside. But Zarco didn't give it to him. Zarco wen't over the line himself, leaving Rossi with little choice. And who is the pot and who is the kettle in your little scenario? I all see are Dorna playing their usual bullshit favorites, giving Rossi a penalty when MM spend half of the 2016 season cutting through paved runoff areas. Yes, 3 Hondas in the top 4, at a track where only Honda have ever won a race. Surely the Yam was the bike to beat (heavy fucking sarcasm). Dani Pedrosa suddenly making his first appearance at the front of a race since... hell, I can't even remember the last time, but surely the Honda was a dog there. Cal Crashlow running down and overtaking Zarco, but surely our hero Cal was just ridding the tits off the dog of a Honda, right? Do you people even hear yourselves? The fact that Rossi wound up within a few seconds of MM, considering MM's dominance in Texass and Rossi's pace in practice, is a pretty good result. Rossi certainly seemed to think so. Austin is Marquez's track right now, and he is dominant there. Kind of like a certain V. Rossi at Mugello for 7 years in a row, no?

Oh dear, perfectly reasoned comments on the racing, nothing controversial but Hoppur (President of the VR46 fan club), gets all defensive and hot under the collar and starts throwing out nonsense like "MM spent half the 2016 season going off track" .

So after hoppurs defense of the Rossi Gibernau incident he thinks that Zarco`s pass was hard but not fair, lucky for Rossi it was a run off and not gravel or the championship would look entirely different.

Shushhh! You do know that we're not allowed to criticise the "GOAT" Hoppur; Race direction deemed a 0.3s penalty fair because they compared Rossi's previous laps through that sector and with that particular lap and he gained 0.3s; ergo...! ExplanationCould Rossi have backed off until he was just back in front of Zarco? Maybe, but I'm sure that would be pretty difficult to judge that sort of time gap during a race. Apart from his two embarassing years at Ducati, he and his team do seem to be able to pull something out of the bag for race day. This time around though a decent qualifying helped Rossi's cause. I can't wait for Zarco to get some more MotoGP experience under his belt; he is going to be a regular podium worrier. It was a real shame that MV crashed out early on as I would have liked to have seen him go head-to-head with MM. The result would have been a whole lot different IMO; but that's racing. Luckily for Honda, this is their track; three RCV's in the top four is a very good result. Curtchlow did well to recover from an early mistake to take 4th. I don't see this as Honda making a breakthrough though; the track masked any problems that they're having. Apart from Fenati buggering off into the distance, Moto3 was a pretty good race. It's a shame that McFast couldn't get on the podium, but he appeared to be having a difficult weekend, so to finish in front of Mir was a bonus; it's certainly tightened things up in the championship. Moto2; Meh! What is going on with Danny Kent? Is he just not suited to the larger bikes or something?

it's getting daft now. rossi on sete is ok. zarco on rossi is not ok. rossi using run off is ok. marquez using the run off, despite never gaining an advantage in time, is not ok. the biggest gain of all time was assen two years ago. after that, there is no comparison in the running off track debate.

Right, although I don't think he could have stayed on the track. Zarco ran slightly over the line himself, so there is no way Rossi could have stayed within the regular track limits without significant contact. Of course you (hoppur) are not going to accept this, but to me Rossi seemed to "decide" to take an even wider evasive line than originally was necessary. When he saw Zarco on his left, he glanced across and picked up the bike slightly, then he picked up the bike even further and shot off in a straight line. Now it could be that the first change of trajectory wasn't enough, but to me Rossi appeared to take advantage of the situation a little too much. I think race direction saw the same and hence the need for the penalty.

Rossi didn't slow down so got the 0.3s back that race direction deemed he had gained as a result of a racing incident that wasn't his fault, but any rider would be penalised in the same situation, regardless of fault. As for Marquez, I don't recall him ever gaining time when he has gone off the circuit.....that doesn't happen very often, you go wide you lose time...hence he hasn't been penalised. A similar thing happened to Lorenzo during the race, he wasn't penalised because he gained nothing. www.crash.net/motogp/news/244889/1/race-director-explains-rossi-penalty.htmlBut I suppose Race Direction, Dorna etc are all conspiring to see Rossi lose out whenever possible, right?....because they'd hate to see the biggest name in MGP winning the Championship, right?...

Someone is miffed because MM wasn't penalised for not loosing any time at Silverstone last year; he was nudged off the track after he went for a gap and ran out of room (racing incident). MM sat up, put up his hand and rejoined with no advantaged gained. The fact there is acres of asphalt run off, which allowed him to rejoin, is not his fault. If it was an issue, Dorna would have imposed a penalty. It's up to Dorna and Silverstone to to agree on track limits, safe rejoining points e.g. see Catalunya and Assen.

After the race Rossi said he didnt blame RD for the penalty but we should look at Zarco's riding. He gained loads of time on MM, not on purpose as he got pushed off. Cant believe this is such an issue, to some. Its not as bad as Rossi straight lining the Corkscrew and overtaking Stoner, for the win.

To me the biggest problem is the race track. It's like painting a track on a massive car park. Imagine the final chicane at Assen with tarmac instead of sand. It's a modern day trend of racing bikes on car tracks. Sanitized racing.

Its almost as if Hoppur wants to see MM crash if he goes off circuit as some kind of punishment for his playstation riding style (his words). Wouldn't surprise me if this was the case. While I think the guy is a bit of a tool, I also look forward to his posts as they're bloody hilarious. I mean, are we actually sure he's not taking the piss?
