Not much reporting of the murder of David Dorn, a 77 retired ex cop, shot trying to protect a store from looters. George Floyd landed five years behind bars in 2009 for an assault and robbery two years earlier, and before that, had been convicted of charges ranging from theft with a firearm to drugs. He was accused of a firearm robbery in August 1998 for which he served 10 months at Harris County Jail. In April 2002, Floyd was condemned to 30 days of prison for trespassing private property. George Floyd was involved in two more cocaine offenses, in October 2002 and in 2004, for which he did eight-months and ten-months sentence in prison respectively. In 2009, he plead guilty to breaking into a lady’s house with the intent to rob her. Hennepin County medical examiners released the toxicology report on June 2nd, 2020 which stated that George Floyd was intoxicated with Fentanyl, Methamphetamine and some compounds of cannabis and morphine at the time of his death. None of the above means he deserved to die, and the police involved should be punished accordingly....but contrast the Media reporting of George Floyd (as if he was some kind of saint), against that of David Dorn, also a black man. If it turns out he was killed by another black man I’m sure BLM won’t be taking to the streets... Doesn’t suit the narrative. i doubt we’ll see Al Sharpton at the funeral of David Dorn..... It has nothing to do with blacks or whites killing blacks. It's the disproportionate treatment from the police. It's why white mass murderers can get arrested by non-violent means but blacks accused of petty theft are tased, shot, put in choke holds, etc. How many white folk die in police custody? But it's deeper than that. I work in a highly educated environment. It's boffin central. Yet only 2% are black. Ok that's just one office. When people talk of "black on black" crime, why is the skin colour even an issue? Are they really talking about "poor on poor" crime? White privilege is not something that's easy to spot when you're white. Black disadvantage is probably a more accurate descriptive term and if you don't think it exists then you're not looking hard enough. |

I know blacks are disproportionately impacted when it comes to police brutality and incarcerations , I’d never deny that. But I can’t abide all these labels that have permeated our vocabulary, am I supposed to feel guilty because I was born white?....Do I understand that I had a good start by being born into a white family in 60’s Glasgow, I do...but plenty of other white kids didnt and still don’t (mind you, 1960’s Glasgow wasn’t exactly diversity central was it?!)
As for only 2% representation in your field of work, the black population in the UK is around 3%?...or thereabouts...so your 2% isn’t a million miles away from that. Could it be better, of course, but you’ll never get equal representation in all industries partly due to geographical realities.
The black population, especially in the US, has been let down and taken for granted by successive Governments for decades....made worse because the party that is supposed to have their backs, hasn’t , instead it’s sucked them in to a life of dependency based on broken promises. Nothing much will change even if Trump is booted out , if nothing much changed after two Obama terms I don’t hold out much hope under Biden. He’s just another entitled, serial liar, war mongering politician, and his record wrt the black population is dodgy to say the least. I wouldn’t expect too much.
Trump is a symptom of the failure of successive governments, of course part of his base are the redneck white trash religious far right nutters, but many are those who feel they’ve been left behind, who’ve seen jobs go overseas and a decline in their living standards...poor is poor.

By now this should probably have its own thread but here goes.
60's Glasgow, I'm assuming was probably identical to 60's Motherwell which is where I was pishing my nappies. I remember vividly the first time I saw a black person. I mean proper African descent black. I was 15, so 1981, and I went to London for the first time. People of African/Caribbean descent didn't exist in the west of Scotland then and are still quite rare. It was in Euston station. The first thing that struck me was the colour of his skin. The second thing was the shittiness of the job he was doing. And that second thing is what has struck me pretty much every time I've seen a person of African/Caribbean descent ever since that day. I've never seen a white guy working in a nightclub toilet handing out blue roll for tips and selling squirts of Hai Karate for £1 in amongst the stench of every cunt's pish and shite.
I don't know how we fix it but I do know that, while we may not be directly to blame, our ancestors definitely are. And any of these cunts who think it's OK to sing Rule fucking Britannia or moan about how we used to have a fucking empire need a serious slap. Then a history lesson. Then another slap. The shameful treatment of black people is rooted in slavery and the UK is very much a part of that. Particularly Glasgow where many of the street names around George Sq and the Merchant City resulted from that trade.
