I had to move some more old shit from my ex's the other weekend and I found a box of old VHS tapes. I was tempted to dump them but I fancied checking what's on them first in case I've recorded any old BSB off Grandstand from that elusive 1994 season. I used to tape loads of bike racing in the 90's. I'm pretty into old technology and I'm aware of how expensive it can be nowadays for audio. But I was surprised to see people wanting £50 plus for VCR's that were being advertised as untested (meaning it doesn't work and I can't fix it myself) that were essentially from around 2004, so hardly vintage ones. Anyone on here got an old VHS video I can have cheap that they can post to me? Whilst rummaging around in the box I found a mint copy of Raging Bull on VHS in a special presentation case. I think I've had that since 1993?
Oh and to save you the trouble.

I have got one of those video to dvd things I used to convert all my old Duke stuff but it weighs a ton and it's technically my wife's and she'd not give it up.
Buy a used one off ebay and then get rid after you've had a look at your collection. I'd love to hear the Whitham commentary again at Hockenheim when he's on about Hodgson getting gang raped.

I'm looking on Facebook market place as well. But people are taking the piss with prices and being very economical with the truth regarding working status and condition.

Whitham was in that race so any commentary must have been at a later date or perhaps he was retelling the story whilst commentating on another race.

I've got one you could have for fuck all but I doubt it's worth the hassle or expense of posting it from here.

Thank you. Hold tight for now as I have two to look at local via Facebook today. If no joy there I will price up delivery options. My plan is to view all the tapes and if anything is worth saving, I have found a local who can burn a DVD from the VHS content for £5 each tape. I did look into buying a machine to do it myself and found a local selling one for £160. But I figured I could get a standard video player for about £30 and there will probably only be two or three tapes I'd want to save for a potential outlay of about £60 all in. Besides, going to random houses of people I don't know could lead to some old school Droog sexual dalliances. Bit of confessions of a Facebook marketplace buyer vibe to it all. The reality is that I'll probably end up at some flea pit where I feel sorry for the inhabitants and end up overpaying for some bit of tat VCR to help them out.

Right I'm sorted VCR wise. The Facebook marketplace ones were no good so I purchased one off of eBay. It's funny how soon we forget things though. I only just realised that the video will output via scart and modern televisions no longer have a scart socket. So I have ordered a scart to HDMI converter.

Today I finally got round to seeing what was on the tapes. Sadly nothing good. Just general TV shit. Most of it from around 1998 which surprised me. I thought it would all be late 80's or early 90's. Anyway, what I noticed is that on my budget 4K 50 inch TV, the video playback quality was shite but not much different from a DVD. Even my Blu-Ray player films look a bit duff. They are hardly pin sharp by any stretch of the imagination. To be honest, it's been years since I watched a DVD or Blu-Ray film and even then, it would have been on a 32 inch screen. I remember getting my first DVD player and thinking the picture quality was amazing. I also remember getting a PS3 when they were just out and being amazed at the Blu-Ray film quality. Both look shite on my TV now. It is only a budget TV but the Netflix streaming or HD TV channels look good. The point I'm making is that the video playback quality was pretty decent. I was expecting it to look much worse.

It's probably that your TV is shite. I've got one of those 55 inch 4k things and the actual picture quality is guff. It's ok for my lad's Xbox but it can't upscale properly and looks like shit. A bit like when you try and play a 800x600 pc game on a 1080 monitor.
I remember seeing some £1600 Sony 65 incher it has in demo mode showing it's 'AI upsampling' and it looked fucking awesome. I've got a standard 42 inch Sony 1080p for the living room and blu rays look great on that. I was watching the 2003 King Kong and it looks awesome. As do all the Kubric films and surprisingly stuff like THe Prisoner and Space 1999. Some blu rays are just utter shit transfers, sometimes the source material is shit and soft and there's not much you can do about it.

I'm starting to think the same but to make sure I have ordered some new HDMI leads.
