It was seeing Jim Whitham returning to racing with no hair all those years ago that got me back into this amazing sport. Everything crossed that he will come out of this. One of my all time favourites.

Hopefully he has discovered it early enough and can get it treated successfully again.

Can still remember like yesterday reading about him getting cancer in MCN. Finished work, purchased paper and went to the pub. I was shocked and although I had only ever met the guy in passing, it really affected me. Hope he makes another swift recovery.

That really sucks. It's almost 20 since JWs previous diagnosis and treatment. You are never cured of cancer; it's always there, waiting for any excuse to gain a foothold again.

JW is still out and about though, despite the treatment... ; www.jameswhitham.com/blog/croft-track-training-dayA mate of mine, Ian, was diagnosed with lung cancer about 3 years ago and he was given 6 weeks to live. He found a surgeon who was willing to look at his case, which eventually led to him having his left lung removed. Following on from that he wanted to give something back, so he started running and raising funds for Cancer Research UK, upping the distance from 5km, to 10km, to a half marathon, until last year he was invited to and managed to complete the London Marathon! At the back end of last year he had to turn down an invitation to run the New York Marathon because the cancer had spread to his brain following a collapse during a training run. The surgeons opened up his head, removed 13 tumours and started him on a radiotherapy course; within 4 weeks he was back out running and this July I am again doing a local 10km charity run with him to raise money for Cancer Research UK in Gloucester. His positivity, lust for life and his dream of seeing his young twins grow up is an inspiration; from what I have seen, Whitham is the same... he never gives up!

Your mate sounds like a top fella Neil. Whenever I feel like quitting during a run, I just think of how hard my dad fought until the end or how deep Ian has to dig every morning just to get up, tell myself not to be a wimp and push on.
