Just been reading in the US of A the democrats are trying to pass a law to limit the mechanisation of farming. Obviously they want mexicans in, hoping they can get illegals the vote to spread their voting base. Meanwhile this penalised small farms that could have saved labour costs.
In general though, because we can replace jobs should we?
When I was in Hong Kong (and Greece was the same) I saw loads of people doing what would be unnecessary jobs in the UK. Do we follow the path of ultimate efficiency?

Maybe for mind numbingly repetitive work I agree that machines are better. What gets on my tits is the likes of B&Q introducing self service check outs and staff hovering over waiting to step in when you fuck it up. Progress my arse!!

As bikers / motorcyclists we've arguably had the best of this "progress" in our times.
Our bikes are still unrestricted by GPS speed limiters so we can go as fast as we want, but at the same time, real coppers have been replaced by Gatsos which, as long as you know where they are, means you can pretty much do WTF you like out of their range.
The next generation are gonna be fucked though, riding fast will soon be virtually impossible as we become more policed by machines.

The next generation are a bunch of gayers that don't like loud noises and don't even have as much sex as our generation. Bikes are not for them. As for the speeding....not so sure about that in CCTV and dashcam UK. The coppers in NYorkshire take in dash cam evidence (when it suits them) so potentially ever fucker is policing you. Sometime in my car I'll limit the driving if I can see the cunt in front has a dashcam. I hate driving/riding near anyone now as they have the power to grass you up. Finding empty roads is a problem. I think the prime years were pre-2000 before highstreet CCTV when only coppers in cars could have you and sometimes they didn't have in car footage either. I once outrun the coppers on the way back from Devil's Bridge because I knew that unless he caught me, he hadn't caught me and probably didn't have my plate at the point I passed him and the speed I passed him (flat fucking out on my VFR400). The world probably ended in 2012 anyway and now we are in the matrix of Facebook and social media.

Pros and cons.
Working in manufacturing causes issues because humans are prone to error and, as long as an automated piece of equipment is functioning correctly, this can be removed. What would take 7 people to build, test and pack, could easily be reduced to 2 people or even 1 if the equipment was of a sound design. In general, consumers have pushed for cheaper goods and to be able to buy them/get them delivered quicker! Who do we blame? If a mail order company says that they can get some goods to you within two days as opposed to a rival which takes four at the same cost, who are you going to buy them off?
Personally, I like the self checkouts in supermarkets, B&Q etc. I don't particularly like to interact with strangers unless I absolutely have to, so this suits me. I can see, however, that having these have probably deprived a handful of people in each store a job. I wouldn't say that I have a phobia, but I certainly get anxious. I have a company Xmas dinner on Friday evening and, beyond talking to those in the particular office where I'm based, I don't really interact with anyone else and I am dreading it; I don't know these other people and small talk is an effort.

This good thread deserves better than a shit answer from me but I don't know.
Terminator is coming. Machines will get better and computers will get even cleverer, so we will see much more of this.
We can talk political ideas all we want but without an eye on tech no party will have workable policies on employment etc. More machines mean fewer jobs so less income for the state.
For now I fucking well love the scan as you go shopping. Those cunts that queue...

Installed my first manufacturing robot back in 1987. I've put an awful lot in since then (mainly assembly, welding, adhesive dispensing etc..), the familiar response was always " When's my job being replaced by one of those" answer I gave back then is still true today. No one has ever lost a job because me putting a robot in but a lot of people have avoided doing shit jobs because of them. Robotic business processes are the main ones causing the issues however. Processing accounts, insurance, banking customer complaints etc.. Try to speak to a real person in a business these days and you'll understand. Software works best when things are black & white it's not very good with grey, despite what the AI bods will tell you. Lets just say, there is there is no f**n way I'm being driven by an Autonomous Vehicle.

If you lived in America you'd be one of those gullible arseholes at a Trump rally wearing a maga hat waving a tiny stars and stripes in one hand and an Uzi in the other. You'd totally believe that a despicable cunt who has spent his entire life shafting cunts is "working for you". I have to admit though, if I was living in abject poverty and being bussed over the border every day to work for peanuts on a Texan farm just to feed my rag-adorned children, my priority would undoubtedly be to find a way to cast an illegal vote ffs.

The democractic candidates are fucking terrible. They make Corbyn look like a landslide victory level of political candidate. Fuck's sake, only in America can an a potential president of the united states be an ex-burglar and drunk driver like 'Beto' O'Rouke. The rest of them would get found out at council level in the UK. America has lower levels of female and black unemployment under Trump. What's that about? Must be racism and sexism at work. Funny how Trump was a businessman until he's became president. look at these two buddies Trump received some award for helping black business before he became a champion of white supremacy.

Also why don't Mexican's address the problem that Mexico is shit? Not much point sticking up for the country you don't actually want to live in is there. The useless fucks have even had the offer of the US clearing out the cartels but don't want to do anything about it.

Trump can't be racist because he's been photographed with a black man? I suppose being sued (twice) for racist practices as a landlord in the 70s was a mistake any white cunt could make.
Black unemployment lowest ever eh? Cool. I mean it's well documented that Trump inherited a strong economy from Obama but I'll play. Go ahead and list which of Trump's domestic policies have led to this historically low unemployment because simply being president at the same time as it happened doesn't really count when all the hard work was completed by the previous administration. Take your time. Use Google if you like.

I'd kind of hoped you'd grown up Meeks. A lot of your posts really do contribute fantastically but this shit, the stuff you can't help, it lets you down mate.

Also worth noting that black unemployment was quite low in America until around 1865...

I dont know where you draw the line but robots will make a better job of drawing it than future generations www.bbc.co.uk/news/education-46019429 A professor of surgery says students have spent so much time in front of screens and so little time using their hands that they have lost the dexterity for stitching or sewing up patients.
Edit. Reading the next paragraph I had to check the date of the article to make sure it wasn't written April 1st Roger Kneebone, professor of surgical education at Imperial College, London, says young people have so little experience of craft skills that they struggle with anything practical.
