After spunking loads of money on a direct drive turbo trainer I thought I'd clean my chain and sprockets. Think again as my Screwfix 'heavy duty' degreaser was shit. My fennicks degreaser was shit, my mucoff was shit and even leaving it in a can of paraffin was shit. No matter how much I wiped the shit down with old rags and and brushed degreaser in it was still fucking filthy. Would have literally been easier just to buy a new chain and sprockets.
Do any degreasers work these days or have they all been neutered by ecolaws?

You have answered your own question. Degreasers are shit nowadays. Only things that work are carb and brake cleaners but they are expensive. I would try buying a couple of litres of diesel fuel, put it in a pan and agitate with a brush as a cheaper option.
