My son has recently bought a 1999 Gixxer mainly for race days but the brakes are just a bit shit and the calipers look like they need stripping and cleaning. Rather than refurb the Tokico 6 Pot calipers he's thinking of either picking up some refurb nissin calipers or splashing out on new brembos both calipers and discs. Any advice for him on the best way forward, if he got the refurb nissins would he need a new master cylinder to match the caliper or would the stock m/c be ok if he was to refurb as well?

If he has the mechanical knowledge, tool and time, then doing the refurb would be my preferred route. Newer, more modern 4 pot Brembos would be better than the original 6 pots, but would be expensive!
If the refurbed Nissins are still OE 6 pots, then a master cylinder change wouldn't be needed and new Brembos come with their own fitted (I believe).

If he's keen and competent, then at least if he does the refurb himself he'll trust the work and the brakes... ... plus, I have always found servicing brakes to be quite therapeutic
