So, doing Route des Grande Alpes in a few weeks, can’t wait. Riding to Paris to put the bikes on the autotrain to Nice, pick them up next day. Saves time and rubber!. The route officially starts in Menton and is about 650kms....then maybe loop round the west of Geneva and up to the Black Forest.... not sure yet...decide as we go along. Anyway, really looking forward to it!...if anyone has any tips for routes etc that’d be appreciated....

Sounds ace. Someone I work with mentions Menton a lot so a nice start.

I reckon you must have gone by now, but remember the area to the west of Geneva, the High Jura, being quite picturesque and fairly free of traffic. On the way back from Monza I went through that area Lausanne to Dole. If you've done the Black Forest before, The Vosges is the French version. The roads are smaller and slower but worth the trip. French hotels aren't as good VFM as the German ones though. I've done north-south once, rather than the usual west-east.

The northern half of Luxembourg is good. More twisty small roads up the Luxembourg/German border along the river. goo.gl/maps/cPsvUPAadJvNorthern Luxembourg felt like a large Cadwell Park, the plateau is criss-crossed with wooded valleys

Cheers Phil....we left 3rd ....rode to Paris, tedious and uneventful , put the bikes on the autotrain...easy to find and straightforward....and got passenger train to Nice..bikes arrived next morning around 11am then we headed north. Vars > Val-d’Isere > Martigny > Sallneck in the BF > Mosel > Eifel then home....brilliant trip and amazing weather, only had a brief shower going through Chamonix....and all the superb twisty roads en route delayed the inevitable tyre squaring off !!
One mistake was going east of Geneva to the Black Forest, should’ve gone towards Annecy then up around the west side of a Geneva....
