Currently got the 2012 slk, valued about 6k for insurance purposes. Don't really like it that much so I've been looking TTs and RCZs and Cooper S type stuff. The insurance quotes seem totally random. 2014 TT tdi....zero change....2013 TT tdi.....give us £50! 3.2v6 mk2 TT...give us 180 more....3.2v6 mk1....we give you £40 back. £12k UP Gti is no change to insurance cost, Mk2 GTi is about £100 less. 2013 Scirocci TDI...£190 more!!!!!! WTF. Old 2003 MR2 £190 more...2003 MGTF I get £90 back. 2016 Cooper S. I pay 90 more. 2013 Cooper S, I get money back.
It doesn't seem to be related to a cars value as a couple of the more expensive cars have been cheaper to insure. Meanwhile a TDI scirocco is the most expensive of the lot and is slower than the TDI TT. At this rate I am tempted to get a 3.2 Mk1 TT. That or the 2014 TT.

It's bonkers. Put a couple of 2009 TT 2.0 cabrios in. One was a £40 refund, the other I paid them an extra £50.

Everyone driving Sciroccos must be an absolute cunt. Even the lowly 1.4t with fuck all power was way higher insurance than my slk. I couldn't get a quote for an R version.
May look at a Mk6 Golf gti see what that comes out like.

It's based on the claim history of the model. It's also based on where you live and who you are but those aren't variables.
I remember about 2000, getting my first Fireblade. Insurance for an R1 was buttons compared to the Fireblade despite being considerably more mental. The reason they gave was that the R1 was reasonably new and had yet to build up a significant claim history while Fireblades had been chucked into the scenery for a decade.

My SLK was less than my Mini Cooper. Oddest one I've found for cheapness is the Clio 200. Way cheaper than my current car but similar stuff like the 170hp Alfa Mito was 'sorry you have to call us'. I guess the key is to buy a performance car that only old cunts are into and not normally ragged hence why an MGTF 160 is way, way cheaper than a MR2. A Jaguar is probably a good one.
I'm more surprised by what people deem to be 'ok' on various car forums. "it's not too bad, only paying £1400 " or whatever. Anything about £300 at this point in time is a push for me when I've got bikes insured at £100 a pop.
My mate recently had an insurance wankathon when some tool in a Tesla crashed into his works van. It literally bent the bumper and took some paint off the door but insurance assessor wrote it off, told him it wasn't road worthy and then tried to get him to accept a hire van that was too small for his gear. He was also constantly pestered about if he really wasn't injured and surely he must have an injury. The whole process seems to revolve around giving various connected parties loads of money and business and he just wanted his van back on the road. He ended up ringing the underwriter or somebody and they said the van was insured until he was informed it wasn't insured so he got another MOT to prove it was road worthy and kept on using it. Anyway he ended up buying it back off them for something utterly stupid like £100 even though it was worth at least £5k and he'd basically had the engine rebuilt a while back so it would last forever. When he refused the van , if you weren't around when they can to get it off you there was a £480 fee.....robbing cunts.
