Started it up today and it sounded like dogshit. Did 10 miles to bike spot and it sounded and went ok under load. Start it up again as I left and it sounded like id attached a bag of spanners to front of the engine.
It's not a ticking noise it's more knocking which probably isn't good. Oil level is ok so not done something stupid like run it without oil. I'll try and upload a vid or sound clip later.
Knock knock...who's there....your rod bearings you daft cunt

Sounds more like a back of marbles tbh. Really had to figure out exactly where it's coming from. One minute it sounds top end then then it doesn't. It does go once you get to about 3k revs. Worse at idle. Maybe it is something simple like cam chain tensioner? Standard procedure seems to be take valve cover off, take to tdc, tie wrap shit in place as apparently just taking the pressure off sometimes leads to chain skip. Whatever it is I can't be arsed at the moment as the car also needs sorting and I've also got the SV to bang about on.

Does the noise disappear when the bike's warmed up? If so, and with it disappearing under load, it does sound like the cam chain tensioner! By all accounts, OE Suzuki ones are dog shit, which is why I went for an aftermarket manual version last year on my 750!

It only does it below 3k. Basically it starts to drop away as soon as you get past idle and then is gone by 3k. I may buy the manual tensioner kit and see what happens. Just seem to have one of those perfect storms of problems with the house, car and the ongoing parent problem. That and still doing family stuff at the weekend. By the time I've got some riding and exercise in theres fuck all left to get on with fixing a bike.

Not looking good. Dropped oil and seems to be a bit glittery for my liking, no bit bits but definitely glittery. Arse.

Took valve cover off. Was looking for an easy win and a loose cam chain but it's tight enough so fuck knows. Will try and get a feeler gauge in tomorrow. If valves are ok then I've no idea and it must be something more dire.

After a long period of doing fuck all. I got my new gaskets and some valve cover rubbers and put it back together after all the valve clearances were in tolerance and the cam chain tight.
Anyway, put oil back , in fired up. Still got the noise. Finally got someone else to listen and they pinpointed it straight away and it's coming from the stator cover. Not pulled it off yet but I'm guessing it's come loose. Hopefully it's not too fucked.
