So I did my valve clearances at the weekend. (GSXR750 K5). Loads were out of spec so lots of new shims.
Everything seemed to go OK, but when I took the bike out it is making a horrible tapping noise, louder than you'd expect from a cam chain tensioner not working properly, and it is directly related to engine speed. Runs OK though.
I kept the revs down and rode it back the the house and put it in the garage. But it's at my in laws house and I can't get back there till this weekend to have a look.
So obviously I'm suspecting that I got the timing wrong when I put the cams back in and can't stop thinking I've bent some valves.
But would it run OK if the valves had hit the pistons? And wouldn't the noise have gone away as the valve edges got mashed off? Or at least changed to a different noise as the valves broke up and fell into the pistons?
I know the only way to check is to strip it down again and have a looksee, but any thoughts to make this long week go by?

Cylinder leak test is the only way you would know if valves had been kissed short of lifting cylinder head.
Just a thought, if you havent re-set cam chain tensioner properly it might make a noise.

Thanks for the reply.
I did reset the tensioner, and heard it clicking when refitting the spring bolt, then it clicked some more when I turned over the motor by hand. So I'm thinking the tensioner is OK...
If it's not the timing out, I guess I must have missed out a shim, or one hasn't sat properly on the stem. My mistake was not measuring the clearances again after fitting the cams...
If the timing is out, it must be by one tooth, so I'm hoping that the valves would survive that... but reading GSXR.com forum, people who have git the timing out by a tooth generally report poor running and failure to tick over...
Sadly I don't have a leakdown tester, but I do have a compression tester, I guess that will give me low comp readings on any cylinders with bent valves.
Well, Tuesday already, only 3 days to go to see how big a bill I will have to pay for the new parts!!

Seems I was lucky, despite my ham fisted spannering!
Turns out that one of the shims was not sat squarely on the valve stem (admission side).
I put it right, checked that the clearance was still good (it was), and planned to do a comp test just to make sure all was OK, but the stupid Draper tester that I have doesn't come with a 10mm thread adaptor... so I just took it for a spin and all seems good!
That was my luck used up for the year I reckon!
