_ Love this thing so fucking much. I had massive remorse about buying it for weeks but 4 months in and it's the best thing I've ever paid money for by some distance. It's no 911 but the handling is more than adequate for the road. Tight steering ratio means you don't really need to move your hands on the wheel during 'spirited' driving - important if you're using the flappy paddles to change gear. But why would you? The auto box is much better at gear selection than you (me). Maybe some more practice will change this hierarchy of gear choice supremacy. One small niggle is that I'd like another mode between eco and sport as they're quite far apart in levels of aggression. A compromise would probably suit me better and save scrolling between the available modes when I'm out for a drive. The power is beautiful. 330 hp won't frighten your average Bugatti but you would struggle to use much more on the road without risking your licence. It remaps to 400hp but I'm not sure I'll bother. Feeling the rear axle skipping over bumps as you power through a bend is something I'll never get bored of. The interior is a very comfortable place to be. It's very spacious. My neighbour has a Boxster which you need to cram yourself into but you can easily swing a couple of cats in the SL. You are cocooned in an ocean of white-stitched soft black leather (even the dash is leather). Everything you need to adjust is at your fingertips. And fuck me, the sound system is incredible. Even in the wind the clarity is amazing from the 8 speaker system. SD card full of tunes and you're off. Downsides? Very few. It can be thirsty when you're on it and I'll be the thick end of a grand for a set of tyres. Can't imagine servicing will be cheap either. So I'm absolutely delighted. Yeah it was a chunky outlay but plenty cunts will pay more for a family estate. You can't take it with you.

Glad I never went for the Jag now. There's no doubt that the XK is a looker and the V8 would give you a semi at tickover but you'd never stop pouring cash into it.
Like I said, the SL has plenty of grunt but I can't help acknowledging that it is the entry level model and wondering what the fire-breathing AMG versions are like to drive.

Go for the AMG A45, wrap it yellow. Get a pops and bangs remap and Burberry cap. Spend the next couple of years doing traffic light launch control take-offs.

Can't be much more tuning scope from an A45 motor. 420hp from a 2 litre? Wouldn't like to see the nick of that at 100,000 miles or maybe they just don't expect them to live that long.
Sadly, small capacity engines with fuck off turbos bolted on seem to be the final finger up the arse of the internal combustion engine as we're forced into driving massive batteries around. It can get fucked.

Problem Noodle is now you cant ever go back and downgrade. You are locked in for life When I was in the states I treated myself to an M4 which was pretty much my dream car. Only a 2015 but it was mint and abit of turbo lag aside it was rapid. Now I'm back in UK i've got a 435D which feels pretty slugish when infact its a fairly quick car but I dont enjoy it much after 2 years of the proper M car. They are worlds apart in my opinion.

That's interesting because the 435D and 640D were 2 of my considerations before I bought the SL. On paper they are very rapid and respond well to a remap. I've gone the other way by going back to petrol after 10 years driving a reasonably quick diesel. Petrols have more of a top end which maybe gives more of a sense of speed than a torque laden diesel with a 4000 rpm redline. I always thought that a decent bike analogy was comparing a litre V-twin with an inline 4. The twin will always feel slower than it actually is but on the road you'd struggle to separate them.

Agree Noodle. Dont get me wrong the 435 is a great car and plenty quick enough - and its telling me im getting 38mpg average. M4 was reading 17mpg which is fine for USA gas prices but I know would piss me off too much filling up every week in the UK.
M240i is the best car I've ever owned. Up to 80mph it will just about stay with an M4 and the running costs are ok and like you say its petrol and gives you more sense of speed/enjoyment. I might chop the 435 in and get another.

We have the basic 2 series. I love a coupe and I'm not fussed about top performance. I wouldn't mind a pokier convertible version though.

Update. Got a Z4. Its fukken mint. This is a little known fact: BMW own the rights to Triumph Motor Company! New GT6 using the Z4 3.0 L 6-cylinder anyone?

Update. Got a Z4. Its fukken mint. Lovely Eddie, show us some photies. The Z4 is a real looker and I'd definitely have considered one if it came with a folding hard-top.
