Good article
Weight was a big factor in GPs in the 1970s and 1980s as despite there being a minimum weight of 100kg the bikes would never match this, the best we got was 108kg. With 124bhp and 108kg, the XR22 was quite a beast!”
108 kgs! I'm trying to imagine my old rg125 with less weight and 124bhp. Crazy.

I had a rg125fun and with 30hp it was amusing enough.

30bhp 125s are pure nostalgia
The 125fun was easy to de-restrict. One wire to disconnect from the ecu. I had my worst ever accident on that bike. Dad came to visit me in hospital - very first words he said to me were not how are you, he just whispered 'I've plugged the wire back in incase the insurers or police check it'

Mine ended up in the side of a car and yes, I too immediately reconnected that wire before the insurance man came to look at it.

I never at the simple pleasure of disconnecting a wire on my NS125F; 182cc big bore kit, Micron end can, racing reeds, less restrictive air filter and a re-jet (obviously)! Not sure what power it made, I saw 105 mph on the clock once.

The RG Suzuki along with the TD and TZ Yamaha race bikes deserve the accolade of best race machines ever because they gave the hundreds of non factory supported men a great chance of success against even the factory bikes' Although in the final analysis there were not many private title winners, a quick off the top of my head count brings up 3, if it hadn't been for the aforementioned RG and TZs you'd still have been looking at Ago winning by minutes and lapping 2nd place 2 or 3 times. Great machines.

Def the quickest against all the others. Didnt last long though before it expired in a big way.

So much fun when it hits the power band. Theres a guy in spain doing track days with a RGV250 with a rg500 engine in it. Goes really well.

Would have thought that rs125 would have hit a bit more top end than 145?
When I was looking at getting a rs125 I read that big bore kits don't really work and you're better off just tuning it as a 125?

A lot of inflated top speeds amoungst road going 125s :-) This is with standard 28mm carb, just a bit more air to the airbox and good chamber. Might make 150/155 with a bit more aero clothing/leathers. A 34mm carb should help the top end to prob about 170 ish. Fully worked with setting squish, good jetting etc max 185. Bike is pretty heavy. Yes, more lower end grunt on the big bore kits. Had my Honda RS125 prod race to 207 at Anderstorp.
