Get a phone call at 6.15 this morning from the hospital. Parents have had a fall and are in hospital. Both of them. Mum, who already has dementia has bad cuts on the head and stepdad seems ok but memory has gone too. Apparently he had an appointment at 3.30 but was found on the floor with my mum near the hospital at 7.30!! The nurse says we aren't sure why they were in the road nearly 4 hours after they left. At this point I don't know where the car is as he supposedly drove....Hospital says nothing to worry about they are fine though. Go over to my mums, which takes ages, to sort the cat out as it was locked in the bedroom. Fire still on. Tried to do a bit of cleaning whilst they were out. Literally 6 month old pizzas covered in black mould in the fridge. Place was fucking disgusting. Left wife cleaning it. Get another phone call from stepdad asking when I'm turning up, he claims the car is in the drive.....ok.....it's not. Go to hospital and found the car parked up on the way. Get to A and E and it's hell. Mum is rambling on and on about going home and stepdad has this far away look on his face and seems to thinks it's just nothing to worry about tikety boo. Finally speak to a nurse and she tells me they are being kept in overnight and need to assess both and my mum looks like shit and has massive cuts all over her face. I stay for 3 hours and he gets a bed but she doesn't yet...Get told it will happen. Need to leave as child will be home soon as go. Wife is now sick and in bed all of a sudden. Wife also found a cheque they hadn't paid in for £33k!!! She tried to pay it in but they couldn't accept it as it was too old to cash. FUCK ME!! £33k. Hopefully the cheque can be reissued at some point What a mess. Looks like they can be assesed for care for free for 6 weeks. I guess in that 6 weeks I'm going to have a get an emergency protection order to control the money or everything will be fucked. God knows how much money he has. Need to get it all together and into one account. Ironically the both have power of attorney over each other but are now both out to lunch.
If your parents are awkward cunts about power of attorney because it will never happen to them.....kick them in the balls!!

Sorry to hear, it’s fuckin shit. Do they have Wills?……you need to get power of attorney sharpish and it sounds like your folks need to at least have some sort of permanent home care.
Problem now is that if they need to go into a home they will have to pay for it unless their assets are less than £23k. We transferred Mum’s house into shared ownership a few years ago to avoid any of that shit, so it’s now owned by Mum, sister, brother and me and the council are unlikely to come after it in the event that Mum needs to go into care.
Getting old sucks!….good luck!

Terrible news mekon but you are not alone. I have heard many similar stories and in some ways your parents deserve credit for getting by for so long. You may be too late for LPAs because you need capacity to grant them. That said, if they understand and you get them witnessed by a healthcare professional they will be valid. Both being in A&E sounds a bit coincidental. Might there be a common reason? It may be said it is not best for them to live alone now. That brings stress. |

I think I have to apply for the emergency version of POA which enables you to get access to funds to pay bill etc. As you've said they area already gone now so you won't get granted the nice and easy power of attorney. Has to go a court briefing I think to make sure you don't rip them off. Costs a bomb as well.
They have plenty of money but if they live for another 10 years in care there will be nothing left. Happened with my Grandad. Think it was something like 14k back then they could take you down to.
I hoping they get accessed as needing care as he won't be told otherwise. He would crawl over broken glass to do it his way. Sadly his body and mind seem to have had enough.
My wife was quite willing to trade off cleaning for going to the hospital. They are shit, depressing places that seemed to be full of the desperately needy and cunts taking the piss because they don't realise if you get totally pissed you get a headache after. I'll be taking a book and a bike magazine tomorrow as 3 hours of I want to go home was getting a much today.
It's shit as my mother was always very sharp, worked at ICI and then in the chemistry department at a school. 11+ scholarship to a grammar school back before everyone's a winner type schooling. Now she's just a rambling automaton. Asked me who I was at one point today which was a milestone as I've never had that before.

Be careful what you wish for. My dad had to go into a care home during the pandemic restrictions and he died there on his own with none of my family allowed in to see him and say any form of farewells.
He didn't have a huge amount of savings but I'd be happy for the care home to take all his savings and leave fuck all for us if it meant i could have actually spent his last hours on this earth by his side.

There is a wider conversation about care here. What should the NHS/social services be providing? What the actual fuck do we pay taxes for? NHS and care funding has been strangled by 12 years of Tory cuntery and this is the result. Nurses and ambulance crew striking to get paid properly for fuck's sake.
No apologies for turning this political because you just can't ignore the fact that this has been engineered. Let it fall into such a broken state that privatisation gets justified.

Please don't anyone think i am in the slightest bit of a mercenary. I've had fuck all off them apart from a bit towards the house deposit a long while back and never expect anything off them anyway. I'm probably the poorest fucker on here and live accordingly hence the old minis and 20 year old gsxrs etc. I'm annoyed that they have money and won't spent it on their self care. It's been all Dunkirk spirit and we lived through the war nonsense. They could be living like kings but it's gone steptoe and son. They used to have decent holidays and spend their money on posh food etc.
And..... onto the NHS. After an evening and morning of fuck all contact ( I knew they were being kept in overnight) I went find them but they were already in the despatch area ready to be sent out. Somebody was supposed to ring me didn't. Amazingly the docs had decided there was nothing wrong with them......whilst I was being told this my step dad interrupted and told us all he couldn't be in the hospital choir as they asked but he couldn't stand up for that long. I spoke to a woman who said they'd come round tomorrow to access for care or not but I my cleaning the place up has now worked against me as it looked 10 times better today. Luckily I took pics.
Got them back home and went to M&S to get them some food. He's repeatedly going on about needing the hospital number as he can't be in the choir and told me their car was still down a road by hospital despite me having used it pick them up from the hospital and parked it in the drive. I really can't believe he's been given the ok from a doc. He's done nothing but talk nonsense. My mum at least waved to school kids and started singing Vera Lynn song on way back.
Oh well, see what happens tomorrow.
Oh yeah, while I was driving their car it apparently has 3 punctures and a picture of a turbo and sign saying stop is flashing. Fucking french rubbish.

It stinks. I’ve tried to get my Mum to spend her money, enjoy it while she’s still able, but she has the same sort of Dunkirk “rainy day” attitude. I’d rather she gave it all away to charity than see the local council get it. Now the Government have postponed the upper care limit increase (to £100k from £23k), that was due to come in next year. Now it gets better. Found by the police wandering around town. Now in a ward awaiting assessment. Just told doc I'm pissed off as they should never been let out. Not sure how they got out as I locked them in. Looks like long term care for them now. He has really mentally deteriorated in literally weeks.
I just can't believe they got discharged when he was obviously rambling. Not happy at all.
Not sure why they went out or how they got out but nurse said he says he was looking for the car....the same car I found and picked them up yesterday and left parked in their drive. Now waiting for the police to call me and also another doctor. Hopefully one that will their job this time.

Just been to the house , car is gone. So they went out in the car looking for the car but couldn't find the car...matrix level stuff.
For some reason there were loads of clothes brought down and strewn all over the living room and loads of cash all over the place. Cat was locked in a room , the food I left them with yesterday is uneaten. I'm surprised they didn't die of hypothermia.
Still waiting for further calls from police and hospital. I've taken the spare car keys and will be taking the main set when the car is found.
Wish my brother didn't live in Australia as he'd be useful right now.
