Or is the truth somewhere inbetween? I remember rocking up to a local spot on a Boardman hardtail and keeping up with this group of full suspension boys on £5k bikes. I think I was about 3s behind at the end of the run.
I think maybe if you're not a natural then maybe you sometimes need better equipment to learn on and then to able to be good on lesser stuff? Maybe? I've always found guitars to be a bit of big con. They're pieces of fucking wood and you can't tell me a machine is shitter at making mm perfect stuff than some fat old american.

The thing is maybe 1% of those bikes would be taken to that level of activity, so in the real sense a bargain. Nobody doing that type of ride would want something not strong enough.
My riding chum is lighter than me with a carbon bike. Our fitness levels fluctuate, we normally can keep pace with each other but from time to time we smoke each other.
Put me on all types of mountain bike and my times would be same. Probably true of road bikes too.
