MOTORCYCLE RACER RETIRES
One man doth not make the sport but he kind of has.
Even my missus knows who he is.
GOAT? There's no such thing but he was unquestionably the greatest for a number of years.
There is much to discuss.

Maybe it wasn't Rossi that was popular it was the colour yellow? Or a particular shade of it?

I don't think that individuals becoming bigger than their field of activity is a good thing in general, especially not for the individual who really becomes the centre of all attention for both good and bad reasons. But to be fair, Rossi has handled it very well in the most part. Not been involved in too many scandals (at least no that the general public have been aware of) and he has kept smiling and presentable throughout. That in itself is quite an achievement.
Then you've got the issue that Oxley discusses, when the individula leaves the sport, they take a part of the attention with them. And I agree with his "so what" observation, if some of them stay to watch the next gen race it is still a benefit to the sport, and if they don't nothing has been lost in net terms.
The only person set to lose out really is Ezpeleta.
Expect his retirement soon.

Sucked into the BT Sport commentary hyperbolae, when I saw him being towed around by Bagnaia I thought ah bless, the old fella is getting a halps.
Then, he overcooked T1 and I thought FUCK this old cunt.

Well at least got out alive and unspazzed. That bike over the head must have been the last of his GP luck gone last year.
Good luck with fatherhood. Probably harder path to navigate than a race grid.
Every sport needs its legends.

Very few injuries iirc. A broken thumb or finger at Donington and leg at Mugello. The leg really fucked things up for him as Lorenzo went on to win the title that year and next year he couldnt hack the fact he wasnt #1 and Lorenzo got the pay rise. He sulked off to Ducati, then back to Yamaha. He still had more podiums and wins after that than a lot of riders ever achieved.
I remember his 1st 500cc win, at Donington. The year Waldmann did that incredible comeback on wets in 250cc. Next race MucSpreader McWiliams was denied a win by Rossi and Roberts. 19,000 was the crowd.

That was a PR masterpiece as a lot of Italians were initially annoyed Rossi hadn't been paying into the system. In the end he took a lesser tax bill than he really owed and ended up with pats on the back for paying what he should have in the first place.
Rossi was apparently quite a thorn in the Pr teams sides as he always late for media duties and did as he pleased most of the time. I think he may be the last of the bigger than sport types as even Marquez seems to play ball.
