Two rounds early, but I was thinking of going to Thurxton this year and I was wondering if anyone has had any experience there as a spectator? Being a fair skinned ginger and a burner, I like a bit of cover and shade (well, a lot of cover and shade if the truth be told), but I don't fancy staying in one place. Looking at images of the place, there doesn't appear to be an awful lot apart from the Grandstand on the final corner.

YOU WILL BURN!
Seriously, top places to avoid if you don't like the sun - Thruxton, Snett, Croft. All have the flat open airfield thing going on. No trees, no shade, all pain.
Thruxton is shit for fan viewing IMO. I used to be able to go trackside in the photo days and it was still shit as most of it is off limits. Then again nothing really happens until the chicance at the last lap or the first set of corners so I guess you see what there is to see as a spectator.
Definitely a better on tv circuit.

The only grandstand & shade is indeed the one at the last corner chicane (bottom left red blob). You cant walk around the whole circuit either, only from that grandstand to the other main viewing area at Campbell Complex (top left). Thats on a bank and as the circuit is flat you get a good view of that set of corners and can follow the riders around until they disappear 3/4 of the way up the back straight until the view is blocked by the medical centre (track viewable marked with green). There is a big screen there as well. There is always action going on into the Campbell Complex as its a prime overtaking spot. I think its one of the best viewing spots in the country. Its close to the track (a bike ended up in the crowd a few years ago), food and bogs there as well. You can also watch from the banking along the s/f straight but once the race is underway there isnt much action as its just a fast sweeping bend. Loads of people watch from there as they are too lazy to walk around to the Complex. By August it will be pissing down.

Like Phil I do think that end of the circuit to view on is good as you can really see what's going on for so long.
Give me a shout if you are going Neil, met some great guys off this board! Not much to see in the pit garages at Thruxton though, what with with them being the same size as an up and over garage door at home! 😄😄

Will do Matt. I met Max Wilson (MilleMax) a couple of times, as he organised the trackdays at RAF Wittering, and he was top bloke... may he rest in peace.
I'm starting to think that this might be a no go. I love watching Thruxton on TV as it's such a fast circuit, but it sounds as if I'll have to take a umbrella with me! I like to walk around a circuit on race day, to get see the racing from different areas. If I stay in one place, my lad will get seriously bored... he is also fair skinned and a burner!
I might go to the Castle Combe Grand National instead and then BSB at Silverstone in September.
Cheers for the tips guys.

As others have already said, Thruxton is not the best place to go watch or for a day out. You can walk around about a third of the track if that. Mainly end up wandering around the pits or the pub beer garden (which is nice). You will meet all sorts of riders in the toilet block though.
