I think the Liz Truss option is a good one, or maybe she could challenge Putin to a joust with both riding bare-chested on the finest Arabian stallions....on second thoughts, scrub the bare-chested part (for Truss anyway).

He has had years in power and his plan has been brooding. How does Europe respond to this? However Germany lets it (remembering that Germany relies on Russia for energy supplies...)

He has had years in power and his plan has been brooding. This is the thing, he might be a tyrannical despot but he's not stupid. He'll likely have all options covered. How does Europe respond to this? I imagine that BJ will threaten to stop offering peerages to Putin's mates but will this be enough? Will Liz Truss do another photo shoot in a tank and shake her fist menacingly? Putin has the West by the bollocks right now. There is literally fuck all that can be done without risking global annihilation and he might just be mental enough. If this list is to be believed, we cant take them on with a ground war. www.nationmaster.com/country-info/stats/Military/Army/Main-battle-tanksI seem to remember talk of reducing our army because as future conflicts would be dominated by air strikes. That worked in the recent past, excluding Afghanistan, but we had more/better planes/air defence than the others and had air supremacy. Sanctions will take a while to have any affect. It sounds even more likely Russia will buddy up with China for trade. I dont think fans booing Chelsea at the EFL cup final on Sunday will do much either.

Sanctions will take a while to have any affect. It sounds even more likely Russia will buddy up with China for trade. Sanctions will have zero effect and even that will take months. The China angle is interesting. They haven't criticised Russia over this invasion. Are they ready to offer more than just economic support? If they do decide to back Russia in a wider conflict, how does that affect the £billions of Chinese investment in UK energy infrastructure? Have we been fucking played?

What a fucking sad state of affairs. Its 2022 not 1922.
No fucking need for it and seemingly unstoppable.
Can anyone see a mildly reasonable outcome?

Can anyone see a mildly reasonable outcome? Someone in Russia assassinating Putin? However, you can bet he doesnt cycle around the streets of Moscow like BJ does*. Also, his close circle could be worse than what he is. * around London.

I have a fear that this thread is going to be like the "This fucking virus" one. 3 years down the road we'll be talking about hundreds of thousands of deaths. And Mekon arguing that they were probably going to die anyway....

Being optimistic again, hopefully the Chinese will keep out of it. They have a lot more world trade at stake than Russia. Recovering from the covid nightmare, I doubt they want to damage that.

China will see how toothless USA and NATO are and make a play for Taiwan.

One of my mates is having a midlife Rambo crisis. He's a 100k a year IT professional but he's said he's thinking about going to Ukraine to fight.....
He's well travelled and has literally ridden around the world on his own so he's not entirely daft but this seems a step too far.
I for one will continue to play Arma 3 on my PC and restart the game when I get killed. No the UK would consider you a domestic terror threat if you came back full of urban warfare knowledge.

I think some countries wont be announcing their plans in public, like Russia didnt. These tankers currently over Poland & Romania must be refuelling something. Possibly spy planes & feeding the info to the Ukrainians.

China will see how toothless USA and NATO are and make a play for Taiwan. I thought the NATO treaty was purely a defensive treaty. Escalating it to NATO v Russia wouldn't be a smart move at the moment. Having a Russian rep on the UN Security Council who will veto any response is going to be a waste of time as well. For some reason, India & UAE joined China in abstaining. Seems India gets its arms from Russia. So that leaves Ukraine to do the actual fighting, and desperate citizens tooling up with rifles and Molotov cocktails isnt an easy watch. We can only hope that the Russian army feel bad enough about fighting people who are close neighbours and once part of the same USSR too hard.
