We are already seeing "fully free" social media sites spring up and this is clearly the way this is going. In the same way people pidgeon-hole other people by the newspaper they read, we will soon be categorised by the social media site we belong to... I think you're right, fella. That could well happen. In fact, as an acid test, I don't use social media and I also don't read newspapers, so your theory holds water, Mr The Cutter. Just to add that I don't not read newspapers as some form of willful ignorance, I just refuse to pay money for someone else's opinion, additionally every newspaper article that I have ever read on a subject that I have first hand knowledge of, has been riddled with glaring errors.

I think big tech companies have far too much influence overall, with regard to free speech they are making judgements on what is acceptable and what isn't with complete unaccountability, and they themselves are protected by law. It's a fine line between censorship of what they consider to be a breach of their "rules" and authoritarianism. Ban Trump but be consistent and do the same for all of the other unsavoury World Leaders who regularly incite on social media.. Big Tech (i hate that term) absolutely have far too much influence. But that is a whole different and much bigger problem to this whole 'free speech' issue - and in particular this one when you have a President using it to incite violence. IMHO its 100% correct that Trump was kicked off. And like you say, this should apply to any World leader. Google / Facebook etc have more power than any single group or government on the planet. Its a real issue but I dont see how they are going to put the beast back in the cage so to speak. Free speech is never not going to be a grey area. Neither side is wrong but neither side will refuse to compromise in the slightest with the other (like many problems on this planet).

Google and Facebook are not really the power holders though, they are just a medium by which individuals or oganisations can generate power. They are power brokers. Unfortunately they are not brokering that medium in an equitable way. They are promoting some content and surpressing others, which gives an illusion of power or distorts the distribution of power. Actually they are just selectively censoring or promoting as per their unlilaterally imposed agendas. Hence people will create similar mediums with opposing agendas.

Agree Senior Clipper, Section 230 protects them from any liability, "a gift to big tech" as it has been called, they are free from prosecution should any user content result in heinous acts. They are only accountable to themselves, this needs to change.

Well this is fuckin hilarious. Trump impeached, parts ways with his defence lawyers a week or so before the trial and hires some muppets. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-56007788I only caught a bit on the news and found this video of the whole speech from Trump's lawyer. 15 seconds in he says he is the 'lead prosecutor' Whoops a daisy. At the end saying Trump was voted out by voters. Not Trump was the victim of election fraud. George & Baldrick could do a better job.

Trump's lawyers could have been even more dog shite seeing as those voting were nearly 50% Republicans. The 2/3 majority was never going to be reached. Amusing trial in some respects, but never going to be found guilty.

I think the new administration should be concentrating on getting financial help to the millions of Americans who have no healthcare because they can't afford it/no job/can't pay rent/all of the above etc etc..than trying to impeach a departed President. This is a distraction. Both parties should be ashamed of themselves for how they have treated their fellow citizens over the last 12 months...from Republicans blocking COVID relief during the summer to the Dems blocking $1.8 Trillion package pre-election because the package "wasn't enough" (which translates to "we're not approving it because Trump will get the credit", then doing a u-turn after Biden won and agreeing on a smaller amount!!....neither party comes out of this looking good. No wonder 100 million cant be arsed to vote because "nothing will fundamentally change".

That being said surely the gravity of the storming of the capital can’t just be brushed away because Trump is no longer president. The film footage at the trial clearly links the actions of the mob with Trump’s fighting talk. The fuckers would have ripped Pence and Pelosi to pieces if they found them.

It can be brushed away if you're AOC basically pretending you were there when you weren't.
I see Biden has gone back to basics with massive arms sales to places like Turkey despite slagging them off previously.

Well that didn't take long. Back to military strikes again. www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-56205056It came after a civilian contractor was killed in a rocket attack on US targets earlier this month. A US service member and five other contractors were also injured when the rockets hit sites in Irbil, including a base used by the US-led coalition. The Iran situation went quiet in the last year. Maybe it just wasn't widely reported if there were skirmishes, maybe there weren't skirmishes. Maybe the Iranians tried it on to test the water with Biden and got reprisals. Who knows? Biden seems less of a fuckwit than Trump (who would probably have tweeted he was going to attack), but he is still a fuckwit.
