Still looking for a 2nd bike (or RC replacement) depending on style or type. There's a couple I'm interested in that are a bit scruffy but claim to have receipts for stuff like swing arms bearing sbeing done, new this and new that.
Would you take a punt or give it miss if the engine casing look like some cunt has thrown a bag of salt on them?
I'm half tempted just to buy another VFR as they are rock solid.

I have, my K1300 was a class C. German plastic is astronomical. The guy who got it from an auction didn't do the best of jobs tidying it up but I didnt pay top dollar. Age and mileage kills bikes, mine looks scruffy but runs superbly. As I didn't know history it got oil, plugs and filters straight away though.

It's an SV1000 with 43k on the clock. Seller claims it's been in the family since new and serviced by them. I guess I'll never do more than 3k miles a year so it should last long enough.

I would probably take a punt. But I couldn't bring myself to get a bike with 3 spoke alloys.

I can't understand the mentallity of a person who would replace a fork seal but not glue a cracked fairing panel, so no. I'd buy a tidy bike that needs mechanical work (as long as it was reflected in the price) instead.

I had a Yamaha XJR1300 for 5 years and did 50,000+ miles on it. It was in a decent condition, FSH. I washed it infrequently and sprayed with ACF50 after. It came up shiney each wash. I rode mostly longer rides, to UK race meetings and touring Europe. Short frequent rides kill engines as the oil isnt up to temperature.
After part-ex it sat at the dealers next to another XJR1300, same year, something like 12,000 miles and looked slightly worse condition, similar price. The dealer sold my old bike 1st, he said to a customer cover up the milometer, look at the FSH, then decide. I saw it now and then at Poole bike meets. The mileage went up slowly, but it soon started looking tattier, particularly the engine. I think the new owner cleaned and polished it weekly and wore all the protective coating off.

I'd rather have some of the pain the arse jobs done and replace fairings and take off engine casings etc to respray. Especially now the chinese are into the fairing game. You can get new fairings for stuff that was previously gold dust and some of the reviews aren't bad.
Other thing I've seen for about £1300 is a Honda CB1. Seems really tidy looking at it. Your standard parts don't seem a massive problem but I guess if you broke some brackets or whatever you'd have a job replacing.
My main problem is unlike last time I can't narrow it down to any one bike I'm after, just need something break up the monotony of one droning bike.

Personally I would rather do the mechanical work than the cosmetic work. Even with cheap fairings/bodypanels being available. In my experience it is a lot more work and money to make a scruffy bike look good than it is to buy a good bike that has a blown motor. Scruffy bikes are always a money pit. They are scruffy for a reason.

Haha yes, abit like matey in his shed who has replaced every nut and bolt - even nickel coated the barrels and did the ports himself. "Bike wants for absolutely nothing. Except it wont start as it just needs a new battery".

There are degrees of tatty. Mine had all the damaged panels replaced no cracked panel repairs its just that some panels came from higher mileage bikes and there were various scuffs caused by tiedown straps when it went through the insurance system. However, £6k and 16k miles for the Motorsport model with extras like those expensive factory panniers is not to be sneezed at, specially since it's an everyday ride. In my cars & bikes I've always gone for "depreciation specials" where they have loads of trouble free miles in them & previous owner has taken the depreciation hit.

Well the sv went for over 1400 which I didn't want to pay for something with 45k and scruffy as fuck.
