Personally I agree.
Clearly the criminal does not fear the police or the judge, otherwise they would not carry out the crime.
At the time of having a crime perpetrated against you, unless you're lucky to have police nearby then, ultimately, you're on your own and you should be allowed to defend yourself and your family.
Obviously prevention is better than cure and there are crimes carried out by people who are themselves victims of social economic issues that have landed them in these scenarios. Helping people out of these environments would eliminate many potential problems and I fully support that approach.
However, even if you took away all the deprivation, there would still be people who are just wired up differently and would still carry out violent crimes, and it's defense against those people that I advocate being allowed to go full bore on should they try and harm you, because if you don't then they will not have a shred of empathy for you.

There's a mainly american populated forum I go on and I remember this one guy going on about how his alarm tripped and he went room to room ready to blow perps away. He was really disappointed it was a false alarm and clearly wanted to test his magnum 44 out because it's the most powerful handgun the world and will blow your head clean off.
Tbh I've got a crossbow and that fucker would put a serious hole in you. My mate bought a smaller break and cock type and even that would stop with lethal force. Keep meaning to buy an air rifle as well though I probably be tempted to overclock into the naughty zone just because I like messing with stuff.
