Been offered a genuine Suzuki C/F front mudguard. looks really nice, inside photos show no repairs and the Suzuki stickers still in place.
Trouble is some mong has rattle-canned the vertical legs in black paint, leaving only the curvy top in bare C/F.
The guy selling it says that the paint is just sprayed over the original finish, no primer or sanding... should come off easy without damaging the original finish underneath.
But what do you reckon my chances are? Sanding it is going to ruin the C/F lacquer surely? I assume it is lacquered?
Chemicals?
Slowly scraping with a plastic scraper?
Any ideas?
It is cheap (cheaper than chinese copy stuff cheap) so it's very tempting...

Search cycling forums. Repainting carbon fibre is a common topic.

If it's just rattle cans and not 2 pack paint, it will literally wipe off with cheap nail polish remover. Less potent than proper thinners so will probably require a few applications but it will work. I'd still double check that acetone won't harm the CF. I take it that it is not pre preg and just wet lay?

Thanks. Acetone doesn't seem recommended for C/F as it could damage the resins bonding the fibres according to the cycling forums (which as Mekon said are full of consultations about stripping frames and forks), but I have no idea about what type of C/F a mudguard is made of!
I think I'll take the risk on buying it and try to scrape off the paint dry, if it doesn't come off easily, I'll try some mild thinners, it's not like the structural integrity of a front mudguard is a life dependent factor.
Failing that, I guess very gradual sanding, but then I'll have to get it clear-coated professionally and that will eat up the saving on the bargain price.
