TBH I could splash the cash I got from the VFR on that but I'm hoping to see something used on ebay. Some RC cup forks on there but also on the other end some new forks taken out of a bike that was raced.
More forum delving has revealed a few people too the oil levels down. Apparently it takes 460ml per leg and some people have dropped as low as 400 and then added 10ml again until they got where they wanted to get as some where using up anywhere near full travel before. Going to stick a tie-wrap on tomorrow and see if I'm anywhere near.

Well took some measurements. Seems all fucked up.
Took static sag first - Front - 25% - Rear - 0% - literally didn't move but there's no exhaust out back so... Then did rider sag - Front - 37% - Rear - 10% !! The shock is only on mark 3 out of 10 on the preload (comfort) couldn't get the fucking collar to move so sprayed with WD40 and will try later.
Are you supposed to aim for about 25-30% rider sag front and rear?

How are you measuring the sag? You can't really do it properly on your own.

My mate came round to measure and I sat on the bike balanced against a wall to keep central or unloaded the suspension to get those readings

Went on the bike to see a mate who actually races. His opinion was the suspension was 'fucked' and I should buy replacements. He couldn't really offer any help as he said all he's bothered about at a track is mid corner chatter and rear end grip of corners.
Ebay it is. I'll be riding that new KTM on Sunday so I can compared. I think mine is just old and tired and that's what happens when a fat bloke puts 12k miles on a rear shock.

Go mental and buy full ohlins kit for it front and rear. My Yamaha Fazer8 had non adjustable forks & preload only shock, best described as bouncy. I didnt mind too much as I didnt race it along the roads. After 2 years/10,000 miles I did an emergency stop and the forks bottomed out. Interesting. A friend had his shock bottom out when he was 2-up. I booked it in for a service and the dealer said he was selling his own Fazer8 and asked if I wanted the Ohlins fork kit and fully adjustable Ohlins shock from it, fitted for something like 50% of new cost. I think the Ohlins fork springs were 10% stiffer than OE and the rear shock was superb.

Just going to bounce along for another month or so then pull the forks off it and see what is what. Hopefully it'll be something simple like low oil levels. Rear probably needs replacing. Can get a new OE one for £100 but may stretch to £300 for a YSS one or try this R6 shock swap. If I stick to roads I know it's not a problem, just don't want to be hitting bumps mid corner on roads I don't know.
So many Rc390 vids on youtube though. Very useful so already know what to expect. The Indian standard of workshoping is very screwdriver and hammer though. Noodle would be fretting if these boys worked on his bike.

Starting to hate this bike now. Got forks off and changed seals, dropping 800ml of dirty oil, it's supposed to be 900ml but some will be left in the forks but not 100ml.
Wasn't impressed when I took the fairing off and came across shoddy build quality of stuff like rotting fairing brackets, broken radiator mount and only one side of the exhaust manifold tightened up.... The other side is seized, half way out and the head has rusted round. Ffs. So much for 4years full service history.
Will try forks out later after I've degreased the inside of the belly pan and sprayed various parts with releasing fluids. Will syringe in 10ml extra if it feels too soft and so on.....

Well went for ride on the SV and swapped bikes with my mate with new RC390 on the way back. His suspension is better than mine, despite being the same forks with no real updates. His shock is pretty pliable but mine is like a fucking rock. There's literally no sag when unweighted and not a great amount when I sit on it despite it being on 2 out of 10 on the preload markers. It's basically shit and needs replacing I think.
The front is also pretty soft compared to mine. Tbh I don't mind mine but it feels a bit more track than road. I may whip the forks off and refill with 4w instead of 5w and maybe give then a longer drain period so I'm potentially not overfilling them.
His brakes were also better. He's got the 320mm disc instead of my 300s. May do a caliper rebuild and get a 320mm disc over winter as his were really good, probably best I've tried for a long while.

Had it hanging from the joists in the garage when I had the shock out to respray it and the spring. The swing arm was free enough. Its a direct mount as well, frame to swing arm, not linkages.

I'll just buy a new YSS one once I've got my month's overtime. Supposedly a great improvement over stock anyway. I think the rear shock is the cheapest component of any importance on the bike. I guess if wanted to race one you got the cup model with decent suspension on it.
I must say my mates was more fun that mine because it was bit softer. Mine still handles I guess but it's a bit more intense feeling as its hard.
