Whilst on furlough, I have had little more to do then scan the internet for entertainment. Done a few odd jobs on cars but now I've moved and don't have 24/7 access to my tools and shed, doing that is proving to be a right ball ache.
Anyway, I've had this idea about building a small capacity two stroke trackday bike for ages. Ideally I'd just go buy a TZ 250 but I can't afford to do that and maintain its upkeep. So I was thinking about a road bike chassis and an MX engine.
That way I get to make an engine fit into a frame it wasn't designed for and I also get to retune an MX engine so it's more suited to a track. Plus build a custom exhaust. There are a ton of possibilities but seeing as I am a Yamaha man at heart, I'd like to try getting my hands on a TZR 125 4FL and a YZ 250 2003 on vintage (engine is basically the same from 2003 to 2017) engine and mate them together.
If I can buy The TZR in a condition needing work or an engine rebuild, I can then buy a complete YZ 250 and resell the rolling chassis from the YZ and the engine and any road bits from the TZR. That alone would get me at least a third (maybe more) of my initial outlay back.
I'd start by getting the engine to fit and then concentrate on the exhaust. Then I could refurb the chassis and uprate key areas like brakes. Fit a TZ 250 fairing and seat unit plus a set of slicks and see what it is like. You can buy a 300cc big bore kit for that engine also.
It's one of those things where it would take a year to do all the basics and get it running and then another five or more years to get it running right.
Having said that, I'm also looking at several RGV, TZR and KR1S bikes that I could just convert to trackday spec.
I will update as things progress. Or not. Thankfully I am back to work tomorrow.
