I can remember watching the first series of Blackadder as an 11 year old and thinking what's this boring shit. But upon viewing it a couple of decades later, I saw some merit in it but the Ben Elton collaboration subsequent series' are far funnier.

Christina Applegate gets a permanent entry in the wank bank.
I never understood all the hate for Ben Elton. Young Ones, Blackadder, Thin Blue Line are all classic British comedies. Any of his novels that I've read have been clever and intriguing. His stand-up was always solid (saw him twice, 20 years apart). But he writes one shitey musical and suddenly he's all the cunts under the sun. You can't please everybody but credit where it's due ffs.

I started writing a post about him after the Blackadder posts, but decided against it. But it's as if you've responded to me without reading it! The answer of course is that he was an annoying patronising cunt. But he obviously is funny when he writes, very funny in fact, and I've got a lasting memory of hearing my older sister pissing herself laughing at night in bed and when I asked her what was so funny she showed me a Ben Elton book she was reading. That was about 30 years ago I reckon, and I've still not got round to reading any of his books. Which one should I start with?

I read Stark but I have completely forgotten what it is about. I like Ben but he did sell out in some peoples eyes. Filthy Rich and Catflap is my favourite. Ooooh sexy sexy milky.

Two Brothers is a very good book. It's set against the rise of the Nazi party in 20s/30s Berlin and provides an interesting insight into that era although you might be looking for something a bit lighter.
Did we not used to have a book thread? I've battered through quite a few novels recently.

How I forgot to add Boys from the Blackstuff and its predecessor, The Black Stuff (Play for Today) is criminal. I do have it all on DVD somewhere. Hard to watch at times but a very honest portrayal or life in that era.
Completely different but I'm also adding Miami Vice. It was revolutionary at the time. But after the first two seasons it went downhill badly. Episodes one and two of season one are my favourites.

I have season 1 and 2 boxset and I thought it was still quality TV. Did it become a parody of itself like Buck Rogers, Magnum did?

I think Michael Mann stopped having a direct involvement with it after season two or mid way through season three? Subsequently a lot of the writers left also and it went to shit. I'm pretty sure James Brown popped up as an extra terrestrial. That's how shit it got towards the end.

I genuinely didn't know it was on. I don't watch television much if at all. It just popped into my head about five minutes before I typed it out on here. Very well written but indeed a very difficult watch. It is probably the last thing from my youth that I will get my son to watch with me. I have already added House of Cards (UK version obviously) to this haven't I?

I've now got the last ten seconds of the Miami Vice theme tune going on in a loop in my head. Mind you, better than that Paul Daniels theme tune I had last time. Oh fuck now I have that again. I'm Imagining Paul Daniels in Miami Vice with a suitcase of cocaine and Debbie sprawled across a bed with a shotgun in some deal gone bad scenario.
