Best commuting revelation I've had was when I bought the VFR and it came with pannier and a top box. I think that statement defines the thread title of getting older with a motorbike, you think top boxes are a good idea and don't mind them spoiling the looks of the bike. I know it did for me. Not on sports bike though. That and not being able to fit on a sports 600, or even a 1000 these days, as my knees dont like it. That's why I went for a Baglux system. I read lots of horror stories about how the tank covers trap grit and ruin the paint, but I've taken mine off twice and it doesn't appear to be doing any damage. I've got to admit though, the bag is a bit big and takes up a lot of space between me and the bars, but I needed a bag big enough for a laptop. Beats a top box. I have an agreement with my wife that I will keep a sports bike until the kids are "grown up" because she won't go on the bike until then (she hasn't been on a bike since she got pregnant with our first). But when the time comes, we will start touring two up and I've promised to buy a comfy tourer... that can have a top box, panniers and whatever wifey demands! I keep lusting after a GTS1000, but by the time I want one they´ll be antiques....

Three hours on the Blade and I'm walking like John Wayne if he'd been in Brokeback Mountain. TBH the Blackbird wasn't much better. I'm not ready for a tourer yet so I'll just need to put up with it.

I had a Blackbird before getting the KTM, comfy seat but bit too much of a lean forward for my dodgy neck. I’m used to the upright riding position now, can’t imagine going back to a Sportsbike again....I still have the performance when needed but on a comfy and practical machine.
