Whilst I was sat in the Triumph cafe in York yesterday awaiting the results of my car spannering handiwork (Mini bastard passed MOT with flying colours after I forgot about it and had to replace brakes all round in a hurry) I was reading Practical Sportsbike and it had a ZX9R feature. Seems a hell of bike for money?
140+hp and 185ish kg for often less than £1000 looking at ebay's sold listings. What's wrong with them, anyone with any experience on hear. I seem to remember that Kwaks had cam chain tensioner problems?
Seriously considering ditching the VFR for one of these at would literally cost me nothing to swap.

These are exceptional bikes for the money; great sports tourers, solid front end, torquey and bullet proof engines, decent power and comfortable. Loads of accessories out there as well, including bar risers if you want to take some weight off your wrists. But the best I've seen which transforms the look of the rear of the bike is tail light cover;

one tried to over take me at Rockingham a few years back...I think there's still bits of it in the gravel trap there, just by the hairpin.

I was looking at getting one a few months back. Can't remember all the research I did but the later models were defo the better option. Had better forks and detachable subframe plus other benefits as I recall. Lot of bike for the money.

They are a bit of an ugly duckling imo so that's maybe what's killing the price? Plus they were never really any 'it' bike in their prime? I guess the R1 kicked the doors in and later the gixxer thou.
Tbh, my VFR is fucking just about on the side of ugly so looks aren't a big deal. Just does seem like more of what I actually want for not much money. Better handling, better braking (much needed as even though I recently looked at the calipers a bit more as one piston in each side was sticking, they are still pretty shit) and looking at vids on youtube, mental acceleration.
I'm guess the only downside will be the VFR is a do hundreds of miles and not have seized wrists type bike where the zx is probably a bit more painful.
I'll tell what I was actually looking for and that was a zxr400 but they've all turned into track bikes or people are asking too much.

tbh. Top whack speed isn't my game and I've got a massive soft spot for 400s. I could happily live with 60hp in the right package. Sadly the prices are stupid for what I want so fuck it.

Prices for good VFR400s are getting daft, 2 strokes are insane. If I was buying it as some forever investment bike I could maybe put the cash in but I want something that isn't just a showpiece and I can commute on. Also has to be common enough to pick up parts for. I'm guessing I've probably got an almost ideal bike in the VFR but it's just a bit soft and too tourer ish for me to love.
CBR600 2001- prices are actually pretty cheap for what they are.

Go for the ZX-9R, you'll never look back. Although, if you want a bike for commuting, it might be a bit 'fat'.

VFR is 235kg wet. That's one fat lad!

I was thinking more about width, I would imagine that the VFR is very fairly narrow and it's weight is centralised.

As Meeks has already said, 400 sports bikes of the late 80's early 90's vintage command silly money for anything less than a rusted pile of shite. 250 race replica two strokes are even more expensive. You would need to spend over £7000 to buy a fully sorted V-Twin TZR 250. You see them for £4000 or less but they will require a ton of work to be done before you can use it. It is fucking mental. I have looked out for a decent TZR250 or FZR400RR for the past 10 years or more. But I can't wrap my head around the money that people want for them. I understand supply and demand but mostly people are just taking the piss preying on nostalgia. Most of the surving 400 race replicas were raced and have chassis that have seen more motoliners than I have had sex.
