Calling it a spectrum simplifies autism so that "average Joe Bloggs" can understand it (or dismiss it as tree hugger bullshit); a start and a finish! Whereas in reality it's more like a 3 dimensional Venn Diagram, with symptoms and traits bleeding from one disorder to another. Being a mechanic or TT racer is an ideal pass time/profession for someone with autism because it gives them focus and order. This is just a thought, but maybe Guy Martin's TT and road racing results started slipping once his focus shifted to TV!?
Everybody is "on the spectrum" to a certain degree. As an engineer, I know that I have autistic traits; engineering is always a compromise and it cuts me up when I have produce something which isn't "perfect".
Dismissing the disorder shows a lack of understanding and compassion, plus an unwillingness to learn and broaden your mind! But by all means, if it doesn't fit into your little "box of how the world work", carry on burying your head in the sand Meeks.
