He was 16 on Sunday. He is disappointed obviously but understood I have been fucked about past two months with key parts. Got carb kit, fuel lines coming this week. Then once that is fitted and I'm happy with how it runs I can fit the rear light, rear indicators and fit all the bolts and screws to finish the rear end off. Then it is just a case of sourcing and fitting the radiator, front lights, mudguards and fairing.

Did a bit this morning when I got in from work. New side panels arrived so I fitted them and some other trim parts.

She is running. Got in from work and did a few bits before attempting a start up. Uploading a vid online and will see if I can post it here. Bit smokey as I am running oil in the petrol whilst the oil pump bleeds itself. Can take five to ten minutes of run time for that to happen. After a few minutes I noticed the oil feed pipe to the manifold was halfway there . Also I filled the bore with WD40 to lube it for the first start up. Love the sound. Was on choke so once everything is sorted it will sound a bit crisper. Could not run it too long as radiator not fitted yet.

That little trip up the path showed up two issues sadly. The first issue is that the rear shock I got new is way too soft and also too short in the stroke. I have the original shock but it is a bit tatty. Found an O.E replacement by Betor for £100. And it's Ohlins yellow lol. Second issue is that when you turn off the key ignition, everything shuts down as it should except the engine keeps running. Both easy to fix but means I need to strip down a lot of it to do so. Bummer.

Nice one boss, good to hear your lass giving you a bolloxing as well. Rest assured I broke the mouthy cows jaw off camera. She knows her place in the world once more.

Good work Mr. D.
These last minute problems are the worst. You think you are at 99% complete, but it turns out it was really only at 90%!! But all projects are like that!

Finally sourced a radiator. Second hand but in good condition compared to the previous 3 I have purchased that were all bent and leaking. Ebay can be crap at times. Thankfully I always got my money back and I also refused to send parts back and chucked them in the bin so they couldn't waste anyone else's time by trying to re sell them. Got it fitted and no leaks after 5 minutes of run time. Off the top of my head I just have to get that replacement shock and fit it, source a front mudguard, purchase the fairing and screen, fit air filter foam when it arrives and then refit petrol tank, get the seats recovered and fitted, fit number plate tail unit and indicators and that is about it lol.

I've been talked into trying to get a 1979 Montesa 125 up and running (it last ran properly about 11 years ago apparently, and someone got it started a few years afterwards but with petrol pissing out of the carb, so they gave up on it).
The idea is to sell it and split the proceeds with the owner... might have to have a quick rag around the woods on it first though!

I should imagine all the seals in the engine will need replacing. Any two stroke left sitting will eat its seals over time. Have a look online and see if you can source the parts before you commit

Bad news. Got a few issues that are potentially going to hold this build up for a few months. I still needed to spend about £600 to finish it. This was largely bodywork, having the seats upholstered and the new shock. I was about to order those parts Friday and get it finished but today I took it for a blat around the village and whilst it is very quick (for a 50 with a 70 kit) and by quick I mean decent two stroke 125 road bike quick, it showed up some new issues that will prove to be time consuming and costly to iron out. The loom is basically knackered (apparently it is a common issue on these) and there is also an issue with the dash. I would need to source a new loom and a second hand dash. You can buy the dash second-hand for around £50-£100 but I don't fancy chancing my luck as whilst they might look fine, until you try it out you won't know for sure. Same with the loom. New the dash is about £500 and the loom is about £150. Even if I pick up a bargain I am still looking at spending another £1000 to finish this potentially. And it could take a few months to source those parts. I don't want to go the non standard dash route as it could prove time consuming. Also the petrol tank where it was damaged around the tank cap is leaking slightly so another tank is needed also. This was only highlighted when braking hard downhill. Another £100 or so at least. And then it would need painting. Seeing as my son is already 16 (as of earlier this month) and desperate for his independence, I'm going to go buy him a scooter next weekend so he can get on the road now. To be honest he isn't that bothered as long as he has transport. If he had been upset I would have spent the extra money and got it done but he wasn't arsed. I showed him a photo of the scooter and he was more than happy. The scooter is the one I was going to buy him new in the first place for £1200. This one is second-hand but only done 600 miles. It is £999. I added up what I've spent on the aprilia the other day. So far I have spent a total of £1790! Add on the potential £1000 I'd still need to spend to finish it and that's a lot of money.
I also could do with having a break from spending a ton of cash every month and working on it in my spare time. By spare time I mean going without sleep around my working hours. The silver lining is that seeing as it is pretty sorted engine and chassis wise, I'm thinking of buying a race fairing and seat unit, putting the other rear shock on it, getting a 50cc top end and finally doing that moped racing lol. But maybe not for a few months. I'm knackered.
