Basically this. Car starting cutting out and gearbox warning light came on. It restarted and drove again for long enough to get it home. Ran Forscan on it and it said crankshaft position sensor was faulty and also mispositioned. I replaced the sensor but it still only managed about 500 yards before grinding to a halt. Put old sensor back in but same shit again. Booked it in to garage, tried to get it there and it cut out half way there then basically wouldn't start at all.
Anyway, they've run a scan and think the timing belt has either slipped or broken and potentially the engine is fucked. They want another £400 to see if the engine is fucked.
Wife is on about buying a new car but I think that's a waste of money. A few places can rebuild for about £1900 including pickup. It's a 2015 ecosport and it had 59k on it (cambelt was due at 60k.....)
Trouble is prices have gone mental since it was bought. I think it's best to get it reconned and keep using it.

I reckon you’ve no choice but to fix it. Otherwise it’s worth fuck all and you still need to buy another.

Get it repaired, then trade it in.

I guess the other cunts trick people pull is sticking it on Copart. Everything on there is sold as unseen as they don't let you visit the sites anymore.
I'm guessing if you got another 5 years out of the car then £2000+ isn't a bad deal compared to buying a new one.

Surprised nobody else has suggested this:
Give her the KTM and a set of waterproofs.

The KTM went long ago. Only got a SV and the GSXR at the moment. Still looking at Royal Enfields, get one with a sidecar!

I don't think her signing up on the forum for her to tell you she favours buying a new one is really worth it? I already said she's mentally written the thing off already. As she knows nothing about cars the weight of decision should really be weighted towards me. As it stands it could be like saying better get a new TV as we've lost the remote.
She's from hundreds of miles away from Yorkshire anyway.
Had some quotes but they are crafty cunts. When you read the reviews of the companies the quotes half the final price a lot of the time as if for some reason you want to swap a perfectly good engine out it would the quoted price. If you've dented pistons and bent valves that's not the price and they will all manner of extra charges on. I bet half of them just blast it with a power washer and change belts and pretend they stripped it down.

Reading your tale again and what you describe doesn’t tally with the prognosis from the garage. If a timing belt jumps teeth the bare minimum would be a very lumpy engine. A snapped belt and it’s going nowhere so the garage are basically talking out of their arse with the timing belt shite. Don’t you know someone reputable who could properly diagnose the fault? I certainly wouldn’t leave the car with these cunts.

This is the main Ford dealer. The car was running but flashing the gearbox warning light, starting to pogo and then cutting out. You could get about 500 yards at a time but before we actually made it all the way it decided it wasn't going any further and either wouldn't start or just did a horrendous lumpy idle before cutting again.
The scan did say the crankshaft sensor had a positioning issue. As it stands they've literally just scanned it and do no mechanical work. Garage say it was also reading for low pressure to the fuel rails which may explain the idling problem.
When I popped the bonnet I also noticed the coolant was low, which was odd since she'd mentioned it and I'd topped it up not that long ago. Fuck knows where that's gone as I couldn't see mayonaise anywhere.
She earns a fair whack more than me so maybe she should just buy a Tesla and then we can only worry about running out of charge all the time.

Well the cunts finally looked at it properly. Timing belt still there, engine in time still. Basically the crankshaft pulley is going so it's sending out mistimed signals. They are going to replace that and belts and water pump which needed doing anyway. Coolant is also leaking from thermostat housing so that needs doing too. Oh well.
