Yeah but he's a current year GP winner. He's set the yardstick himself by winning. I'm guessing Aprilia were thinking if AE could get 3rd then Vinales could get 1st. ... riding a relatively unfamiliar bike which has had 1 podium in 5 - 6 years of trying! I'm not expecting anything from him for the rest of this year, if he can match AEsp. normal 6th places, he'll be doing well IMHO.

Bastianini was really impressive, and he has shown some flashes of quality earlier in the season. I think it's fair to say he has outshone Marini by a considerable margin. Come to think of it, is Marini doing any better that Rabat did? But, it was mentioned that Bastianini's home advantage in Misano is huge, he has a race spec Panigale v4 which he uses to do laps during his free weekends and even he admitted that he probably know this track better than anyone. This is possibly the reason he got the podium, not to take away any merit of course.
Mention should be made to Marc also. Very intelligent riding to benefit from the "weaknesses" of others. Is this his new style? Intelligent I mean, I'll be the first to admit that I didn't think that it was his strong point.

If memory serve me correctly, which isn't reliable at the best of times, but I think that Marini has always been a bit of a slow burner; especially in Moto2 at any rate!

The age of the slow burner is over I reckon. That stuff is for BSB where Jack Burnacle thinks people are still young into their 30s.
At least back in the shite bike privateer days you sort of had an excuse if you were Chris Walker on a 135hp bike and Doohan had 200hp.

Well, to answer my own question, it seems I may have been a bit harsh on Marini. He is actually on 28 points with 4 races to go whereas Rabat scored only 29 points in his first MGP season.
That said, in Rabat's first year on the Ducati, he managed 35 points from only 11 races (injured at UK round), an average of 3.18 per race, and Marini is on 2 points per race average this season.
I hope Marini does repeat his Moto 2 "click" when he suddenly went from zero to hero, but the MGP teams are not known for their patience in this respect. Rabat had cash, Marini only has diluted genealogy...

Bastianini was very impressive, never mind that he ran loads of laps on a superbike, he still had to outride some world champs on familiar bikes with his older machine.
