That was my initial thought as well. As Herve says Tech3 are a small team and the Yamaha is probably quite expensive to lease, so if someone else comes up with an offer they cant turn down. Still quite a shock to read about it though. It paves the way for a VR46 Yamaha MotpGP satellite team as well. edit. Ha ha, I read the news on motogp.com and jumped to the same conclusion as crash.net www.motogp.com/en/news/2018/02/22/tech-3-and-yamaha-to-part-ways-in-2019/250422

I wonder if the Tech3 to KTM ties in with Zarco....

I like the way they make it sound like Herve's choice!
I get the feeling that after the interview a few months ago (when he said that Yamaha were going to take away the Yamahas as soon as Sky VR46 team wanted them), he got a call from Yamaha along the lines of "Herve-san, you have disrespected Yamaha by telling the world our plans. Now you must find another pair of bikes and make it sound like it was your choice to leave".
In the long run though it will be good for Moto GP. There are too many Ducatis out there anyway, and the Marc VDS Hondas seem to just be road bikes with the lights taped up....

I wonder if the Tech3 to KTM ties in with Zarco.... If Rossi retires to run a VR46 MotoGP team and Zarco gets the factory ride I guess he wont complain. I guess VR could even do a player/manager role and ride a bike himself. Kagayama is still doing that in Japan. I agree with Clipper, it would all be good for MotoGP. More KTMs on the grid for variety and VR46 wont have too much trouble attracting some sponsors to keep money coming into the series.

Would giggle if Tech3 ended up with Suzuki's....
Don't see tha happening, but would be funny as everyone is saying KTM is a done deal...

Nah, done deal with KTM. With KTM they also have a capable rider who knows the bike. KTM wanted to put Kallio as 3rd rider but others complained, IIRC. Would Kallio finish ahead of the current KTM factory riders on a regular basis, like Zarco does for Yamaha/Tech3. I think so.
More Suzukis would be ok though.

No great surprises there then. He was never going to jump ship this early in his career imho.
The big question is who will be his new team mate?

You don't see it being Pedrosa?

I do not see there is anyone faster than Pedrosa who can replace him - but it just feels like he's naturally coming to the end of his time with Honda to me
Edit to add - maybe it all hinges on this coming year.

Nor do I, but I feel as though someone younger and hungrier would benefit the team. Pedrosa is a great rider, but he's had more than a fair crack at the whip with Honda. A seat at KTM or even Suzuki might breath new life into him; a proven race winner on his day and championship contender at MotoGP level is what they'll need.

Morbidelli is his likely replacement if he has a good rookie year. Nothing would make me happier than to see DP world champion in what his realistically his last shot at it. I think he deserves it. But I know the odds are low. I would have loved to have seen him on the Yamaha though at the time when the rumours were he was taking Lorenzos seat. We'll never know how that could have turned out - but it would have been interesting to see.

If the rumours were to be believed, it was Marc who blocked Dani's "replacement" in the HRC team the last time contracts were up, meaning that Dani kept his seat for the current term. What's to say that MM doesn't do the same again to keep Dani at his side? Seems reasonable that at his level he has that sort of power. Rossi certainly had/has it.

"If the rumours were to be believed, it was Marc who blocked Dani's "replacement"" Who was that going to be? Its a good point though. He's the perfect wingman for Marc. Development wise he's also important to Honda - anyone who has read Stoners book will know this.
